I actually use my floppy drive at work for activation of Logic Controller programming software. The floppy has to be in the drive each time the program is started.

We are getting new computers next week without floppy drives and I am pissed that I have to use an external, causes chaos in my fung shooey or whatever...

No, the software comes with a floppy keyed to the serial number. We have tried putting it on a USB key, but it doesn't work. Newer versions of the software come with some kind of online registration that locks it to a specific PC, but it ain't cheap. Oh well, not like I am paying for any of this anyways :)

Creating a disk image and mounting that disc image to the same drive letter as the floppy would be hasn't worked?
