benjo09
So I'm off to Amsterdam with work on Monday. Don't know how much free time I'll get and know theres plenty of distractions but anyone know of any good record shops? Thanks
mattstrike
Oh, man… I have some notes I took when I was there in 2005 - will search my "files"… There's a pretty interesting store in Leiden (heaps of CDs and a very good, but small, selection of vinyl) and a skate shop with (oddly) a huge punk vinyl selection in the basement. When I was there I had to control myself cos the bins were filled with late '70s and early '80s punk– Alternative Tentacles, Dischord, PVC, SST, etc. all original presses. Will hopefully remember shop names or at least the streets.
frank
That skate shop is Independent outlet, Vijzelstraat 77, near the Munt Plain. They have indeed a great vinyl selection. There are some more vinyl stores on Utrecht street and one near the Heinecken Brouwery and another one in the Jordan area, but the name escapes me

mattstrike
Thanks Frank! That's the one. Plus there were a few good ones (a lot of jazz (Blue Notes/Impulse), '80s post-punk, Waits) in Rotterdam, which is a short train ride away - and if there is anything you should experience in the Netherlands– besides beer and art– you should experience the trains. Great public transportation with well designed wayfinding systems! (Hey USA! Get yr head outta yr ass and take a hint from Europe!) EDIT: If you have the time, go check out the Paradiso - a great music venue in Amsterdam. Many a legendary band have played a legendary show there. Def worth your time. It's schedule is online, www.paradiso.nl.
