dynamitekid
I need to install a new OS so im backing up my files onto an external HD. Can I just drag the Macintosh HD icon into the Hard drive or is there a lengthier process?
sgoodcore
You can probably do that but it will likely not be something you can restore your computer using. I would drag over your data files and applications. Forget the OS-related data.
benchwarmer
what OS are you going from, to? if it's possible use time machine, easy to restore from there. if not, just do what Sammy said.
dynamitekid
I'm switching from 10.4 to 10.6 so I dont have time machine. So I should just go through the Hard drive and drag each file individually?
alex13
Should work. I would personally drag over each individual main folder one at a time to make sure there are no errors/locked files, etc.
Just Another Tom
yeah, just drag your music folder, picture folder. etc. You might want to move your iTunes library files, but personally i would just take data and start form fresh.
sgoodcore
Or there's always a buying a third party to get it done. You might, might be able to find one for a free trial to get done now what needs to get done. Then you should use Time Machine, it really is damn good.
