Pan Sonic space explorer Mika Vainio and Sunn 0))) strongarm Stephen O'Malley rock our world to the foundations with this anticipated union of electronics and guitars recorded as ÄÄNIPÄÄ, featuring vocals by Alan Dubin (Khanate) and string arrangements from Eyvind Kang.

In gestation for some years now, the results are little short of a modern doom masterpiece; a bracing exposition of cold, condensed, rage and stoic passion delivered like a slow, internally bruising hate-f**k to the head, blowing metallic smoke and blinding with its blackened brilliance.

Their journey takes place over four extended sections. Khanate vocalist Alan Dubin intensifies the opening and closing chapters with harrowing screams reciting the writings of modernist Russian poet Anna Akhmatova against Vainio's robo-Bonham boulder drums and O'Malley's exorcising riffs whilst the central pieces are eerier, more spaced-out.

Vinyl comes in a double gatefold jacket, mixed by Randall Dunn and mastered and cut by Rashad at D&M. Also available on CD and download formats.

From Editions Mego. 1st copies on color vinyl already sold out.

Sick.

That is some group of people. It's weird how stuff like this seems to fly under the radar.

An excerpt from an interview with Mika Vainio.

What was the best sonic experience you have ever had?

There was some wonderful thunderstorms. Hard to choose… When I lived in Barcelona, in autumn there were massive thunderstorms. It was really nice. And play some classical music like Beethoven really loud at the same time and watch all the thundering and lightnings.

New Mika Vainio album out today:

'Konstellaatio' is the excellent new album from Mika Vainio's Ø project - his first in this guise since 2008's incredible 'Oleva'. Following on from the crushing technoid scapes of 'Kilo' under his own name and the blackened alloys of his ÄÄNIPÄÄ album with Stephen O'Malley, 'Konstellaatio' reveals the revered producer at his most sensitive, teetering on the brink of the abyss and projecting to the stars. Between the goosebump-inducing panoramic pads of opener 'Otava' and the twinkling electro-dub of closer 'Takaisin' we're made privy to some of the strongest material in his whole oeuvre, and we really don't say that lightly. His tactile manipulation of bass and sub-bass dynamics and spacious application of pure, isolated frequencies is just mindblowing, evoking imagery on sub-atomic scales. Far from being an academic exercise in production, there's an awe-inspiring and compelling sense of pathos and wonder at its core owing as much to the grandeur of Beethoven as it does the diffuse sound sculptures of Parmegiani. It's pointless listening to this material on sub-par speakers because you're gonna miss half of it's extreme subtleties, but for those who know and care about this music, prepare to bunker down with one of Vainio's finest.
