  1. I can think of two besides a few named ones that sound reasonably bad.

La Dispute/Touche Amore split, but maybe that's the whole point because the digital copies sound bad too.

IIOI/Everyone Everywhere split sounds so lo-fi and scratchy.

Tigers Jaw S/T 5th press or whatever it is on orange/white starburst.

  2. I went searching for a Sunn Beta Lead Combo but I'm currently playing the Craigslist waiting game on both amps. I figured the weight wouldn't be too big of an issue since I've been lifting stupid Peavey cabs for a while and I've adjusted to the obnoxious weight/size. I should sleep on the Super Twin, I just keep thinking the volume can't be that high because it's a combo and I'm not used to it so I have to constantly remind myself 180 watt tube, combo or not is way too much for bedroom level stuff.

Really holding out for a non crazy priced Beta Lead combo at the moment but they're getting harder and harder to come by

Honestly, if those things had a master volume, they would be pretty manageable for using in a bedroom. I played through one of the later models of the Dual Showman, blackface with red knobs, and with the volume at zero, it was putting out an audible signal through the cab I was playing through. At about .5, it got quieter and then the tubes started to open up at 1 and it sounded much better than at 0. Seems just ridiculous to me for an amp to be that loud without a master volume. It's unusable in a bedroom space, but obviously it wasn't meant for that.

You will be much more satisfied with a Bassman 100/135 or Dual Showman Reverb (Twin Reverb circuit in a 100W head). If you really want the combo, look no further than a plain ol' Twin Reverb.

  3. I'm not super familiar with Sunn amps, but what I do know is that they are loud and have very unique distortion. I also know people really like them for doom metal. If you're into that, you could check out a Sovtek Mig 60, 100 or 100H. They're also super loud, but based on the Marshall Plexi.

Honestly, with tube amps, as long as you don't drop the damn things, they'll be just fine. Older amps need to be upkept just like a car. Good power tubes last 3-4 years and good pre amp tubes last 4-5 years. Electrolytic capacitors last 10-15 years (in my case, 36 years). The fortunate thing with SS amps is obviously that you don't have so many parts that wear out, but even they can be problematic over time.

Do you run pedals with your rig?

  4. Check out a Fender Bassman 50, 70, 100 or 135. The 70 and 135 are made with ultra-linear power transformers and they apparently sound a little sterile. My experience with a Bassman 70 didn't make me feel that way. I have a Bassman 100 that I absolutely love. You can pick them up for around $500-$600, but you'll want to make sure it's been serviced.

Mine is almost all original from 1979 and I have to replace the electrolytic capacitors in it because if they go bad, I could end up having some major issues in the future.

They're all great, loud amps. Lots of clean headroom and perfect for pedal platforms. I can get mine down to bedroom levels very easily and still sound good. It idles quieter than any other amp I've ever heard.

I prefer head + cab because it's a little easier to carry around. Some of those Fender combos are ridiculously heavy.
