  1. I think if you go out of your way to look ridiculous - like some kind of metrosexual parody with a swoop haircut, girls jeans, shaved arms, and guyliner - you deserve what you have coming.

Making fun of someone for being overweight or balding or something they can't control is stupid regardless of any scene.

That said, the Crash Romeo guy isn't the most offensive thing I've seen.

  2. I even got to see the Refreshments once, way back in 1997, I think, at this annual Labor Day music festival in my hometown -- right when the first record came out (I hadn't heard of them yet). I remember loving "Down Together" (mainly because some girl in the crowd took off her shirt and was wearing a black-and-white-striped bra), and also "Banditos." They also played a song I'll never forget, called "Rearranging Deck Chairs On The Titanic," which I've always wanted a studio recording of but it's not on either of those two albums.

Have you checked if it's on any of his Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers albums?

I saw the Peacemakers probably about 6-8 months ago. It was a phenomenal show. He played for about 2 hours and maybe 1/4-1/3 of the set was Refreshments material. He played most of the first album. I heard he came back to Vancouver once since but I missed it, so watch out for them.

  3. I'll start it off.

    Fastball - The Way

    I fucking love that song.

Last year I remember listening to a pair of Fastball full albums and they were both really good. "The Way" was probably the worst song they did. I recommend looking up more of their material.

Does anyone remember the Refreshments and their one-hit "Banditos"? Their follow-up record "The Bottle & Fresh Horses" was a zero-hit wonder, commercial flop that got them dropped from their label - and it is seriously one of the greatest albums ever. No doubt a desert island ten for me. And not only that but Roger Clyne has put out four or five decent albums on his own since then.

  4. I was going through the boxes of CDs in my closet - many of which have been collecting dust for years - in order to back them up on hard drive so I can get rid of them. And I popped in the Mid Carson July "Wessel" CD that I thought might just be a shitty old pop punk disc. Then I find out that it's the best Latterman album not made by Latterman.

Moral of the story is I miss old Fueled By Ramen. Last year I remembered how good Pollen was.

"Top Shelf" is one of the best songs ever...

Also, I've been listening to this old Cadillac Blindside ep put out by Fueled a lot recently.

Rediscovering Cadillac Blindside definitely won't be necessary for me. "These Liquid Lungs" has been a top 10 all-time album for me since it came out.

Anybody know if members of that band went on to do other bands?

  6. I don't want to counter one flammatory statement with another, but I think that is a really narrow-minded statement. Consider this:

    1. I want to listen to music but I don't have the storage space or the need to own CDs when I have an ipod and a hard drive.

    2. I want to listen to music without violating any copyright laws or robbing musicians of their royalties.

What are my options? I can legally purchase MP3s from itunes or another online music retailer. I can also buy the vinyl (if available) but that won't help me on the bus. But I guess I am an idiot because I don't want to have boxes and boxes of CDs collecting dust?*

What about paying money for other online services? Perhaps subscribing to print or photo media on the internet? Or paying to join some sort of online-based community or game? Does that make me an idiot too?

(* I actually do have boxes of hundreds of CDs I am willing to sell off for cheap or give away to a good home because CDs have no value to me anymore)

artists get almost none of that money. if i remember right 66 cents goes to apple, 25-30 to the label and riaa, and the remaining few pennies go to the artists.

You're using a straw man argument here. How much royalty money the artist receives isn't the point of my argument. There are several reasons someone may want to purchase music (or anything else for that matter) legally: royalties, quality assurance, ethics, whatever.

  7. i have an ipod and not a single track (out of the 12,000 or so) were downloaded from itunes. you have to be a serious idiot to spend money on something that is not even a tangible product.

  8. I decided to stop buying CDs altogether. I've accumulated thousands of them over the years, and I move every couple years, so I got sick to death of moving them around when I never listen to them. I put them on my ipod and external hard drive and that's it. Artwork and booklets are nice and all that, but way too fucking cumbersome, especially in a small apartment. I have my vinyl for looking at pretty pictures and listening to high quality music. Besides that, the album covers look nice on my ipod touch anyway. I have vowed to never buy a CD again. They're redundant. Vinyl/MP3 combinations are all I need.
