  1. went to salvation army today and scored BIG. picked up a JVC RX-750V with a turntable and cassette deck for 20 bucks. this receiver blows my old one out of the water. now i have a spare table, and a deck to boot! :)

good to hear! thrift stores are always a good last-ditch effort. sounds like you picked up a combo stack. those are great as back ups, but be aware of the quality of the needle on those things, a low quality needle can fuck up your records over time. it is possible that JVC might actually have replacement cartridges available for that unit, but you'd have to do some digging.

  2. AH! My Sony receiver just crapped out. I am bummed, especially with RSD releases coming in... :-/ My dad has an old tube amp he said I can use. Can someone recommend a half decent and inexpensive preamp, or perhaps vintage receiver for me? I need to replace this ASAP!

Here is a link to some solid, yet relatively cheap preamps: http://www.needledoctor.com/Online-Store/Budget-Phono-Preamps

As for finding a vintage receiver on the quick: best bet is to visit or call up any thrift stores in your area. sometimes a cheap thrift receiver (with phono input, of course) can make do until a proper one is found. just ask to test it before you buy it. this is crucial in the thrift game. but do not rely on a cheap thrift receiver to be a permanent fixture, more like a spare one in case something happens to your main one (like in your initial problem).

oh and a copy of macgruber on dvd for $6

  4. people in michigan---

i know a shop called Rock of Ages in Garden City had quite a few copies of this for a price tag of $39.99... dunno if they sold out by the end of the day, but if you're desperate it may be worth a shot.

And i was also okay with paying a bit more for this, like other guys said, it's about $15 per record, with great packaging and rare cuts that i would expect to be included in a "deluxe edition". it plays and sounds amazing, and is a record i will get a lot of spins out of.

I had to resist the urge to take of the shrink and place it directly into a record frame to display on my wall so everyone could see it.

no you cannot listen! you may only look!

  5. I don't know about the price at other places, but at my store I peeped their exlcusive CD for 29.99 @ RSD.

not really my thing, but I saw quite a few people pick up it with the intention to buy. But then they saw the price and it was quietly and quickly set back down.

"Oh sweet! The Mumford exclusive edi- Oh... Nevermind."

  6. Anyone know what attendence is usually like at Tigers games?

Tampa is in town while we'll be in the city and we were thinking of going to a game.

Just wondering if we need to get tickets in advance or if we can wait until the day of.

Attendance is above average for an MLB team I'd say. If you don't care abut where you sit you can usually get tickets the day of. I'm no big baseball fan, but I don't think Tampa will be a sell out game. If you do want good seats, i'd look into buy in advance. there are a ton of season ticket holders. the place is usually very full (from the times i've gone) but the atmosphere is great for a ballpark, complete with artery-clogging food and 8 dollar beers. but Comerica is a very nice stadium and the surrounding area is pretty nice/safe too.

and i know it's been said multiple times, but DIA is an absolute must. You could spend an entire afternoon going through the 3 floors. plus they recently renovated it, and it is spectacular.

  7. I'll be there too. Magicstick is one of my favorite venues mainly because it's so small and there is no barricade. HWM will be insane here.

Detroit's not all bad, just sections of the inner burbs can be. in the real downtown you have standard bums and standard filth that you find in other cities. just don't be stupid when you're there. IE- the stuff you normally wouldn't do in a big city late at night, same rules apply.

You won't hear gunshots or get accosted as soon as you get out of your car, and generally even the bums are nice. i would advise against street parking, that can be iffy. but if you park in a paid closed lot or structure your car will be fine. I've gone to countless shows in Detroit in all areas and never once had a problem. (knock wood)

But be smart, it's not Boca Raton, it's Detroit. Respect it and it will respect you back. Unless you're a pretty white girl, then it's rape central.

@stevetangent- your avatar pic is awesome. i hope they save the sign and leave it where it is.

  8. Man On The Moon is the best drama he's been in. as for the rest, in order...

Dumb And Dumber - "Harry... I took care of it!"

Ace Ventura 1 - "Your gun is digging into my hip."

Cable Guy - "No way. I'm on Steven's team."

Liar Liar - "Weight, 105. Yeah, in your bra."

Ace Ventura 2 - "Excuse me, you balls are showing. Bumblebee tuna!"

The Mask - "Hold me closer, Ed, it's getting dark. [cough, cough] Tell Auntie Em to let Old Yeller out. [cough cough] Tell Tiny Tim I won't be coming home this Christmas [cough, cough] Tell Scarlett I do give a damn. [fart] Pardon me."

Bruce Almighty - "I'm Bruce Nolan for Eyewitness News. Back to you, FUCKERS!"

  9. Don't know if anyone has posted this but it looks like Rega is putting out a new turnatable to take the place of the P1 called the RP1.

    more info here: http://www.rega.co.uk/html/RP1.htm

needledoctor.com has it listed, but as 'coming soon' with a pricetag of $445. A bit more expensive than the P1, but looks like you're paying for the upgrade in quality. http://www.needledoctor.com/Online-Store/Rega-Turntables

Maybe this will mean the price of the P1 will fall a bit as dealers liquidate stock...

  10. I saw FU @ the punk rock bowling tourny this past spring. had always heard of, but never listened to. needless to say my mind was blown. we were front row on the barricade and the lead guy stripped off his shirt during the 2nd song and spent the majority of the set on the barricade going fucking nuts. just some amazing hardcore music. they were the #2 highlight of the night (HWM being #1). after they left the stage i knew i was going to be a fan and spend my money on their vinyl. talked with a few members later on in the casino, and as everyone has been saying, they are some of the nicest people.
