If I wanted to make my own Expedit-type bookcase, what kind of wood should I use?

I've been meaning to hit up the local Lowes/Home Depot and getting some plywood.

Plywood is ugly. Make sure you get a nice veneer for it.

plywood would be easy and cheap

and they have this stuff to put over the edges to make it a nice clean finish, and it turns out looking just like normal wood for a 1/4 of the cost

check out turntablelab.com. they have the Stronger 12" single pic disc, The Good Life 12" single pic disc, and Gold Digger 12" single on gold vinyl. pretty sweet. but they're UK imports, so they're pricey ($13.50, $12). shipping was $10, so that kinda sucked. i think they have the first two full lengths, too.
