  1. ""Circle Takes the Square have launched this Kickstarter campaign to generate the funds needed to complete the recording process" FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP
  2. Also, how much of that recording and manufacturing money was put to printing the band's logo on flashlights, drink koozies, and water bottles?
  3. "Circle Takes the Square have launched this Kickstarter campaign to generate the funds needed to complete the recording process, and cover the costs of manufacturing their forthcoming collection of songs, entitled DECOMPOSITIONS, Volume I. " You said earlier in the thread that the Kickstarter was just for the recording (which I hear wasn't even that costly, due to a member of the band having his own studio set up) but the actual Kickstarter says it's for the recording and manufacturing of the album. Continue lying and backpedaling.
  4. It's because this band has no integrity. They're a bunch of delusional flakes and liars, as evident by the Kickstater, this thread, and that $100+ record bundle with it's DIY flashlights, drink koozies, etc.
  5. The 2,500 you asked in the Kickstarter was to fund the recording process. What did you guys do with the extra 9,000 you made on there? Use it to "fund" those flashlights, tote bags, and drink koozies? All the necessary things a small, struggling DIY band needs to get by...
  6. "Glowing review" from Terminal Boredom: Solo odyssey from the Chinese Restaurants frontman, whom I shall refer to as Dick for this review, with accompaniment from various NYC comrades, including members of Pop. 1280 and Bunny Brains. As Chinese Restaurants, this guy provided me with two of my favorite songs of recent vintage in “River of Shit” and “Summer Romance”, and Dick’s solo work steps up the fidelity, leaving the scuzz on the bottom of his shoe and making full use of a 24-track studio. The one thing I never fully dug about the Restaurant’s vibe at the time is his giving into that noise artist tendency to uh…annoy people, for lack of a better phrase, by going just a little too far with things, the Obama samples on “River of Shit” being a perfect example. I’m just your average working class Joe over here, and I have little patience for that kind of wackiness, but you have to expect that sort of thing from a guy who associates with the likes of Mattin and Malcolm Tent. Where this record excels is his finding a perfect balance between rock music and art music, vulgarity and beauty, and crafting art-rock that appeals to traditional minded sorts like myself without having to dumb it down. “Porkography” is a free-skronk intro that sets the table for “Yolanda”, built on a simple sonar synth bleep and guitar/bass pulse while Dick croons in a manner somewhere between Glenn Danzing and Bryan Ferry. Repetitively fascinating and a very NYC sounding song to a non-native like myself, something I feel I’d hear in my head wandering desolate streets alone at night, the glow of the skyscrapers above my head while I stroll through the dark. “Virdiana” is all chirping guitar, maybe a xylophone and Dick harmonizing with himself, one persona deadpan, one persona a cracked-voice nutter – almost a dance song with a crackling Reed-y guitar solo. “The Devils” is a guy being dragged through the wilderness and singing his pain out, very SCG or maybe Alvarius B sounding. The side ends by answering my prayer for a new recording of “River of Shit” sans the Obama samples, with a synthesizer fart emphasizing his vulgar moans of ecstasy. “The Tank” opens Side B with some more free jamming, this time a little on the freakfolk side which segues us into “Mary Ann(The Lens)” which is a surprising little gem of baroque UK-sounding pop-sike, or at least a mocking approximation of the form, cello solo included. “Working Hour” reminds me of wandering the house in the middle of the night, either unable to sleep or freshly awoken from a dream and looking for a snack or the bathroom, the moonlight playing tricks on the family pictures, your sleeping partner, sort of a beautiful and melancholic reflection on how strange life seems in those quiet moments. The fact it is a Tears for Fears cover (and a couple other brief moments on the LP) make me fear Dick is taking piss on my leg when I'm not looking, but I don't think that's the case. Of course he makes another left turn then, with “Let’s Make Love” another instance of Dick mocking (in a nice way of course) a genre, this time a nearly Home Blitz-ian bit of powerpop, which almost devolves into a sex instructional but instead ends with some tawdry sax and a post-coital cigarette. He closes with “Johnnie”, a wistful acoustic number with a gentle organ and handclap percussion. Hyperbolically speaking, a really great record, with its campy moments revealing a deeper emotional resonance, a record made by an artist who I don't think is hiding behind these contrivances but using them to talk about life, family, love, loss and the beauty, humor and sadness of it all. Wonderful stuff and a record that will reward repeated listens, as the tracks are dense with references you might not catch the first few times around the block. Scum stats: I honestly can’t believe there were only 300 copies pressed of this, and if there are any left at this point, shame on all of you. (RK)

  8. YGR: "Those who just listen to the first thirty seconds of an MP3 and then delete it need not apply: cancel those dinner plans, you're gonna need to set aside some time for Richard Papiercuts.". Also who need not apply: Dudes who release "post-hardcore"/screamo bullshit like this:
  9. Siege is GONE. The only shirt available now is On The Might Of Princes.
  10. Defiance Ohio Against Me No Idea GONE. Still available = Siege and On The Might of Princes.
  11. All are in great condition. No tears, holes, etc. $10ppd each. If you have any specific questions on any, feel free to PM me or ask here. Everything is adult small except On The Might of Princes and Defiance Ohio. Medium and large respectively. This small Against Me shirt has a little pit stain action going on. The lighting makes it look a lot worse than it actually is (trust me). $8ppd.
  12. Review from Still Single: Interesting, strange rock project from someone in New York who seems to want to remain anonymous, though from the looks of the credits on this LP, has aligned himself with noise artist Mattin, and members of the bands Talibam!, Ultrabunny, Pop. 1280, and Chinese Restaurants (he’s their drummer, it seems) – mixed company for sure, though they are effective in helping him get these messages across. Sounds of inner city emotional turmoil are put forth by a guy whose voice sounds like a towel full of human tears being wrung out, sort of a Scott Walker style croon at first that soon devolves into a nerve-wracked, affected night on the town of carousing, which in turn devolves into serious drinking and what some people would call “sin.” Would say that it has a downtown quality to it, only who lives down there anymore? I picture a dress shirt with a banded collar on whoever Rick may be, and his screeds and tales of people doing wrong and alienation are met with some decent musical ideas, mostly ranging from an art-rock perspective (think Pere Ubu, maybe), of an era gone by. There’s an alignment of sorts with the works of Michael Gira, and these songs turn out to be an exorcism of sorts, even as the sentiments in them turn sour (not sure why he had to yell “faggot” at one point, but I’m sure there’s a lot of explanation to endure on that note). I picked out clear references to Joy Division and less-clear ones to Mighty Baby, so whoever this is has good taste. Not something to reach for every day, but if the subway breaks down, and the sketchy guy in your neighborhood with the clipboard makes a move for your wallet, you might find yourself on the ledge with Mr. P. over here. http://still-single.tumblr.com/
  13. Ha ha! That's why I put "couple", smartass. Joy Division LP and XYX 7" are GONE.

  15. New review from Put The Blog In It's Coffin: Debut solo long player for Dick Papiercuts, long time NYC Avant Rock man-about-town, and 14+ years under his belt with sporadically operating Chinese Restaurants, as well as the first release for the CA-based Pena label. I thought that the last two Chinese Restaurants singles on SS a few years back were fine enough, but their no-fi, (probably intentionally off-putting) jokey nature didn't earn 'em many repeat plays in my household. The press writeup on this thing just sounded so damn enticing I couldn't resist though. Label's shilling it as an urban update to Corky's Debt...well sheeiiitt Holmes, nem's sum pretty big shoes to fill. Let's try 'em on for size...what'd 'ya know-they fit! The joking continues on this record, with the word play in the name, ridiculous vocal crooning and plenty of piss-taking on innocent targets (Joy Division and Bunuel on "Virdiana," Mighty Baby on "The Devils", the godawful new-wave cum-on of "Let's Make Love," just to name a few) but it doesn't seem as tossed off this time around to me. In fact nothing sounds tossed off at all. The songs on this record are complex, diverse, and in their own peculiar way, mature. After a noisy opening blast Dick settles into the lunging "Yolanda", sounding like the estranged 4th Walker Brother whose share of tunes written for Nite Flites got cut from the original. To close out the A-side, the Restaurant's protest staple "River of Shit" gets re-worked sans Obama speech-clip with members of Ultra Bunny and Pop. 1280. "Mary Ann (The Lens)" is like the Frogs on an English Folk bender and self-references "River of Shit" in its lyrics. And closer "Johnnie" sounds oddly akin, whether it was intended to or not, to Hurt Me-era Thunders. As someone who often finds himself a good deal funnier and more charming than others seem to, I feel like I can really relate to where Dick's coming from with this one. Even if the quips aren't good, some body's gotta laugh at 'em. You know that well intentioned, vaguely-creepy yet awesome older dude who schooled you on everything from Canterbury Prog. to the books Tarkovsky adapted his story-lines from when you were like 19, but when you heard the music he was working on it was just kinda corny and tedious? This is like if it were really good instead. http://www.ptmiic.blogspot.com/
  16. Dude, you own multiple My Chemical Romance records. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE.
