  1. I really do not care about Pretty & Nice or any other Kickstarter band, no offense. It is crazy and backwards the way bands think these days. Myspace whoring, making 25 shirts before you have an album, touring two months into being a band, putting out records, asking for donations. I don't understand why these are the first steps bands think they need to take in order to be successful. "Oh man wouldn't it be neat if we put out a record? Yeah! Let's make a Kickstarter the kids will love to support an earnest band like us! Check out how earnest we are in this video, goofing around like normal people! Make the Platinum On Our Dick For Life $2000 package come with 10 shirts! Hand Screenprinted! Hand Numbered! Colored vinyl! So Authentic!" I bet the real conversations are even worse.

this is the only Kickstarter that matters

  2. No, Kickstarter is not dumb. Using Kickstarter to put out a record, go on tour or get a publicist is dumb. If you are a new band, you do not need to put out records or tour yet. If you have been around for years and this is your third album, maybe you should be more concerned with the fact that no label wants to put your stuff out. Pressing a record does not "legitimize" the music in any way; put out a fucking CD. If you really have to put out a record, save money. Isn't that how shit got done before the internet?

  3. Have you all seen the new TDK gear?

    http://www.tdkperformance.com/en-us/

Everyone knows TDK makes blank CDs and tapes but in the past month or so they have begun releasing their new line of electronics. They have 2 ghettoblaster style boomboxes (2 speaker and 2 speaker + woofer), a 1 speaker sound cube, headphones and a turntable (non usb and a usb model). These things all look fucking good. I really want to try out and look at these things but the only store that carries them is Futureshop in Canada. Best Buy only sells the 2 Speaker boombox in stores. I thought this stuff was just style but after hearing the boombox at the store, it really impressed me. The other problem is that because they are new, no one has reviews of this stuff yet. The only reviews for the turntable are on Amazon and from their "Vine" program. Vine is a thing they do where they send you free stuff as long as you write a review of it. So the opinions of the people who reviewed the turntable are either, "I haven't played records in 30 years, what the fuck is this?" or "the software they give you is a trial! blah blah this is bullshit."

I've been thinking that the turntable + boombox + headphones would be a good minimal setup for $1100. I already bought the headphones and I'm pretty impressed with them. At $200, they are way way better than Beats and are pretty comparable to things in that price range. But I don't know, I'm not big into headphones so for all I know they're terrible.

I would just give in and get a Pro-Ject like everyone else but I would like to pair it with one of their amps, a new cartridge and maybe a speedbox, it will be around the same price. While I do want this stuff because space is sort of an issue, I feel like I could get a lot better stuff for $1000.

(Right now I have two tables, generic preamp, stereo w/ those Insignia bookshelf speakers everyone raves about. It's not bad but I want to upgrade.)

  4. Make sure you guys make another thread when to have a reality check and find out your records aren't worth anything. I think you are forgetting that the price of a record has to do with the music on it first and the rarity second. Sorry but in ten years no one is going to care about a bunch of dumbshit pop punk records no matter how many it's limited to. You can't argue with the ten copes of one album vs ten different albums debate. If your record shelf looks like someones distro storage you are doing it wrong.

  5. buy a used d70s for around $300.

edit: if you have more money to spend, add the 50mm lens for $125 and if you want a zoom 70-300mm for $150. I shoot canon but I think these prices are right and know the d70s and 50mm are winners.

edit again: I looked it up and the 18-70mm lens usually comes with the d70s, that is also a good lens and pretty good one to have on for every day walking around, it it around $200 used.
