jayg Posted August 8, 2014 Share Posted August 8, 2014 I am planning on moving soon and have started building a new listening setup. I couldn't pass up a good deal, so I made a quick decision and purchased a Pro-ject RM 5.1 SE turntable (Black). After the purchase I decided that I prefer the Pro-ject 2Xperience Classic (Mahogany) for a couple of reasons. The first is that the 5.1 does not come with a dust cover, which I definitely want. It's $100 to get one for the 5.1 but is included with the 2Xperience. Another reason is that I feel the 2Xperience will look better with my speakers (Martin Logan Motion 40s in cherrywood). After doing a little research, it appears that there is a difference in cartridge between the two models. The 5.1 has a Sumiko Blue Point No. 2 and the 2Xperience has an Ortofon 2M Red. There is a much higher price tag for the Sumiko cartridge, but the 2Xperience sells for a few hundred dollars more. Is the cartridge that much better? I really like the look of the 2Xperience more, but I just want to make sure that I am not sacrificing noticeable audio quality for aesthetic differences. I have the 5.1 on eBay right now for $100 under MSRP so I can put toward the 2Xperience. Any advice is appreciated before it sells. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

kannibal Posted August 8, 2014 Share Posted August 8, 2014 I almost bought the 2Xperience Mahogany 3 and a half years ago. I ended up buying a VPI Classic. I doubled my budget, and it was totally worth it. Not that I think the 2XP is bad, I was just fortunate to be able to stretch my budget at the time.
