Possible Grounding Issue?

Recommended Posts

I know there's like a million topics on this but I haven't found anything that's similar to what I'm experiencing.

I recently bought a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit SB DC and I love it, but I just started to notice a hum. I would always listen to my music through speakers and I just recently started to listen to it through headphones. When I have the headphones on the hum is very noticeable, through the speakers it's not until you turn up the volume.

I googled and searched for everything. I don't believe it's motor because the hum is on no matter if the turntable is on or not. The cart is in place so there's nothing wrong there. I'm figuring it's the ground wire or something to do with grounding.

I'm kinda new to hi-fi stuff so I don't know if there's anything special I need to be doing for grounding? Other than just having the clip screwed in…

One thing I found that was interesting was that when I removed the RCA cables that came with the turntable the hum disappeared, so I figured I just have to get different cables. I got some RocketFish ones which I know probably aren't the best but I just needed something not expensive to test this out. Once I plugged those in the hum was back, but louder. I tried putting the ground wire back on from the other cables and the hum was still there but quieter. I noticed, too, that if I touch my fingertips to the grounding terminal the hum goes away…

Does anyone have any recommendations or insight into what's going on?

Well if it's not grounded then there is your culprit.

Are you using the same source for your headphones as your speakers? If it just does it on headphones the problem is in the headphone section somewhere be that the headphones themselves or the headphone amplifier.

Also check it doesn't do it on speakers by getting a bit closer to the speakers and having a listen.
