bchris02
I inherited a turntable that plays LPs, 45s, and 78s. I have always been interested in turn of the century 78s so I went to my local record store and found several 78s and they played and sounded good..better than an LP actually. However, I am reading that you aren't supposed to play 78s with a regular needle. Is it possible that I damaged my needle or the 78 records? The needle I can swallow but I really hope I didn't do irreversible damage to these records by playing them with a regular needle. As for playing the 78s, is there a needle that can interchangeably play LPs, 45s, and 78s, or do I need to change it out if I want to play 78s vs the more modern speeds? TheGhostOfRandySavage
Most users here don't listen to 78 rpm records, but a cursory google search turned this up: http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=5222
Guest
If you're going to listen to 78's, I suggest you get a cartridge and stylus made for them. A modern stylus is probably not very good on the old shellac 78's.
El Pee
The folks I know who switch between 78 and 33/45 have a dedicated cartridge and headshell just for the 78s, so it's an easy switch. If you only played the records a few times, you probably didn't do any damage... needledoctor.com might be a good place to look for options.
