jaaake
So I went out to go get lunch, and as usual I left my laptop on my bed, when I got back though, the hinge got broken somehow. So now it just falls all the way back, or closes, so I have to keep it propped. It's an 8 year old compaq, so it'snot really anything special, but I don't think the age has anything to do with it since it was fine yesterday. What can I do about this. thomas
Spend a ton to get it fixed, or some how make it prop up on it's own. This happened to my parents laptop, and I tried everything to fix it but they ended up doing the first option.

xipander
what model compaq? can you take a picture of the top half of the keyboard up to the hinges and the bottom of the laptop? usually you can take the screws out of the bottom, take the keyboard off, then popup that top bezel and that's where the hinges connect. there should be "L" shaped hinges that run down the sides of the screen and connect to the bottom piece of the laptop. you can tighten the screws there. or you can buy a whole hinge up assembly on ebay for $20 - $30 and replace it. it's pretty east, a handful of screws and just one cable (lcd cable) unless it has wireless, then you'll have the antennae cables running under the keyboard and cutting thru to your sound card. but it's still pretty simple to replace. i used to be a laptop engineer at HP a few years ago... : /
thomas
My parents laptop that broke was a HP. The hinge broke, then the cover around the lcd screen started to come off. They only had it for about 1.5 years now, but they only bought an extended warrenty through compusa which is now out of business. I think it cost them $250 to get fixed.
