valenzi
So I finally got rid of my crosley table and started using my girlfriends parents technics sl-d2. I hooked everything up last night but the speakers make a weird noise. Id say its a mixture of humming and static there. if I turn the treble down the noise is reduced a bit but its still there. I used two different speakers and both had the noise. Should I replace the speaker wire or would it be something other than that?
aweaver
if there were no problems before using the new table then its probably the table. dont replace the speaker wire its not that. you may need a new cartridge and/or tonearm on the table if its not been well taken care of. check out www.audiokarma.org for questions like this. valenzi
The whole set up is new to me. Its all been sitting in a basement for probably five years. I cleaned the table all up and what not. Even when the table isn't on and its just the receiver and speakers it makes the noise. The speaker wire looks pretty beat up so im assuming that's what it is but im pretty new to all of this. gumbercules
Are you grounding your turntable to your receiver?
aweaver
hum could definitely be from not having the table ground wire connected to the receiver. static is more than likely from dust inside the receiver. i would suggest opening up the receiver, spraying the switches and controls from the inside with electronics cleaner and then turning knobs and or flipping switches to really get the cleaner in good. you can buy electronics cleaner at any hardware store. valenzi
Well this is embarassing. I forgot to ground the table to the receiver. Thanks!
lemmegetchojuice
what's not embarrassing is that you admitted what you did even though a bunch of stupid fucks are probably going to give you shit for it. +
