  1. Saw them for the second time last month, first time was right after Boxer came out.  Fantastic band, all around.  I've listened to Trouble Will Find me about a dozen times and I still can't get into it like I have the earlier albums.  It's by no means a bad album, it just hasn't grabbed me like I was expecting.

I agree with you about S/T being a little rough, but I do love how 29 Years kind of evolved into Slow Show a few albums later.

After you've exhausted their catalogue, I'd recommend tracking down The White Session and The Black Session bootlegs.  They're both excellent.

Edit : I just listened to both of these, since it's been a while.  The Black Session isn't as good as I remembered it being, but The White Session is great.

Thanks for info! I had never even heard of The Black Session and The White Session. I'm to assume Ebay might be my best bet at snagging them?

Edit: I haven't dug to deep yet, but are these sessions only downloadable?

  2. Sad songs, alligator, and boxer are my favs. High violet was good but that's where I started to loose it for them, I can't get into the new one.

Definitely check out Sad Songs for dirty lovers though

Thanks! From what I've seen a lot of people feel this way. I'll check them out for sure.

This band just continues to evolve and progress; I'm a fan of literally everything they've done, though that S/T is pretty rough around the edges.

@ Tamubro: I actually got to see The National for the first time, about two weeks ago.  This tour has been incredible, as I'm sure you're very aware of.  From my experience and what I can gather, yes: Matt always brings it.  Frantically running through the audience and shouting during Mr. November is a staple of their live performance, as is the unplugged (and chillingly harmonious) Vanderlyle closer.  So good.

For their Portland performance, they put on a concert that I can comfortably rank somewhere in my top three shows.  Just phenomenal stage presence, band cohesion, setlist picks, and stage effects.  We were up to the stage as close as possible, but a little to the right from the center.  (That is to say, we didn't score any wine.  Nor did any of us get to hold Matt's arm while he crooned over the audience in the show's final minutes.)  But I was completely thrilled to be so close, and to soak in so many details.  The brass performers also bring a whole new dynamic to their live show, in my opinion.  All kinds of rad.

As far as their discography goes... Alligator is a must.  As a whole record - from start to finish - I think it may be the most consistent thing they've ever done.  Lots of classics to be found on that one.  You really won't regret it, I can assure you.  And like crossedout mentioned, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers is also worth your time, absolutely.  I personally find that album to be a little front-heavy, where the first half (maybe even the first three quarters) outshine the rest, but that could just be me.  Either way, I enjoy it immensely.  You can't go wrong adding either of those records to your collection.

Thanks Derek! You are 100% right with how amazing the brass section was. It really added something to their songs. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Alligator is definitely looking like it's going to be my next purchase. I'm thinking I might need to go to my local record store today and pick it up.

I've been in an awesome mood ever since last night. Seriously one of the best shows I've seen.

  3. Well, I saw The National last night. I can easily say this is my new favorite band. Trouble Will Find Me has been my go to album since they released it in May. High Violet is definitely a close second, but it's just something about Trouble Will Find Me that really took this band to the next level IMO.

Matt Berninger was on fire. Towards the end of the night he jumped into the crowd, still singing, and ran half way to the back of the venue. It was incredible. He darted straight for me and my buddy and then kept on going. He is definitely an entertainer. He also handed an entire bottle of wine with a cup to someone in the front row! Perks of getting there early I suppose

I wanted to start this thread because I've enjoyed this band for a while now. I wanted to see what others had to say about the shows they've attended. Is Berninger always this animated? Screaming, pounding the microphone against his head, running through a sold out crowd? I could tell that the crowd at times couldn't believe how into it he was.

Also, where should I go from here catalog wise? My knowledge of the band only goes back as far as Boxer. I've heard many of you saying that Alligator is by far and away their best album. Would it be good to jump into that. I haven't read much about Cherry Tree and haven't seen the best of reviews for their self titled. Thoughts? What is everyone's favorite album?

It was a great night, and I did see they were selling the Deluxe Vinyl for $50 at merch. Saw a few people walking around with it.
