  1. Kobe's second foul was a horrendous call. The calls were tight but they cut both ways. The fouls were basically even going in to the half. Odom had 3, Kobe had 2 quick ones, everyone was in foul trouble.

Kobe gets away with some ridiculous non-calls too so it kinda balances out. That dunk block on Tony Allen was alllllll hand.

Everyone gets away with things, here and there. Kobe got fouled a few times with nothing called. All I'm saying is, the foul calls evened out and didn't provide any team with a heavy advantage that swayed the game.

  2. See but that's not actually funny. That's just someone with self-hate issues. Or someone who's afraid others will make fun of him so he does it before they can.

maybe youre the one with self-hate issues. thats why you get so offended at the slightest mention of the word "jew". regardless of what it is, youre a very angry person and you need help. All of your friends must have to walk on egg shells around you because they are afraid of offending you and don't want their spleens ripped out. And please don't take it out on your gf and beat her because your mad at me. i would feel very bad if you did

  3. ^^ yeah, what he said. and let's not forget, pujols still has a LONG way to go before he reaches any of the numbers we're talking about here. yes, as of right this very instant he's on pace, but Griffey at one point was on pace for 800 home runs had he played long enough, and we all saw what injuries did to him. there's a reason these type of longevity numbers stand for so long... they're really fucking hard to reach. not only do you have to be really really good, you have to be really really lucky with your health. pujols is already starting to have minor nagging injuries. they might not seem like a big deal now because he's young enough to overcome them pretty quickly, but over the next 5-7 years, those things are going to take their toll.

And with the Poo-holes body type, big and bulky, I'd imagine he's playing career won't quite be as long.

  4. This series really comes down to how the refs are going to call it, but I'm going Celtics in 6.

I really haven't heard anyone talking about it, but I think this had a real impact on game 1. The refs called that game ridiculously tight which = advantage Lakers. They called it the same for both teams, but it hurts the Celtics more because they are the more physical team. The phantom/touch calls on Ray Allen were especially bad.

The Lakers probably would have won that game anyway but I hate watching games that are called that way.

Kobe's second foul was a horrendous call. The calls were tight but they cut both ways. The fouls were basically even going in to the half. Odom had 3, Kobe had 2 quick ones, everyone was in foul trouble.

  5. according to all the new fangled statistic barometers... you gotta include tris speaker, and dimaggio as way better than griffey... and thats just center fielders.

Pujols & A-rod will both end up with superior numbers to Griff as well.

Pujols might be remembered as a better hitter, maybe. But he's not even close defensively or speeed-wise. Starting a team right now, both players in their prime setting health aside I'd take Griffey all-day, all-night over Poo-holes.

As for A-Rod, steroids or otherwise, he might go down as the best player ever.

And I'm not sure Joltin' Joe played as good of an outfield as Griffey and he also gets bonus negative points for ruining Mantle's career.

  6. Haha that one's pretty good, and one I haven't heard. My aforementioned Jewish roommate used to go to bars and anywhere that crowds might be and play "find the jew!" He plays this by throwing change on the ground and seeing who takes the time to pick it up.

See but that's not actually funny. That's just someone with self-hate issues. Or someone who's afraid others will make fun of him so he does it before they can.

  7. Don't let the Kobe heroics fool you. Phoenix plays defense about as well for the Newark School For the Blind.

This series really comes down to how the refs are going to call it, but I'm going Celtics in 6.

Its Celts in 5 or not at all. They're not closing out the Lakers at home. At least I don't see them doing it. If Artest shuts down Pierce, Lakers win. If the Celtics shutdown Kobe and Artest doesn't shut down Pierce, Lakers lose ala 2008. All that said, I think its Lakers in 6 or 7.

If Lakers win both of these first two home games, its the Lake Show in 6. If they don't, its the Lake Show in 7.

  8. Isn't the efficiency of solar panels the issue? I don't know much about them, but i had a professor go on a huge rant about how impractical they are because of something like that. This was also 5 years ago, though.

I know that's an issue for certain. But there's a ton of unused land. While that does impact the environment, I would venture is far less than raising the temp of the entire planet.

And again, if you invest in the technology its get better and cheaper. Me personally, I don't believe we can just wait for it to get better and cheaper, we have to help it get there.

  9. Griffey could have easily played 200 more games in the prime of his career had he not gotten hurt but what does that equal...maybe 40-50 more hrs? 150-180 rbis? (lowball) He probably still wouldn't have broken the hr mark but he might have gotten to 2,000 rbis. Maybe he wouldn't have broken down so much in the latter part of his career but he COULD have gotten to 700 hrs.

Also, whats so wrong about overturning an out call? The NBA does similar stuff all the time.

What so wrong about NOT overturning the call? Is that what you mean?

And as for Griffey, he got hurt when he was hitting 40+ homeruns every year. And he got hurt for years of playing time. Closer to 3-4 full seasons. Considering he missed most of the extreme live-ball era, its not far-fetched to say each of those 3-4 years of time could count for 50 HRs.

In 1994, he played 111 games and hit 40 HRs. (lets add 9 here for games missed)

In 1995, he played 72 games and hit 17 HRs. (lets add 23 to his total for this year)

In 2001, he played 111 games and hit 22 HRs (lets add 18 to his total for this year)

In 2002, he played 70 games and hit 8 HRs (lets add 32 he was playing hurt)

In 2003, he played 53 games and hit 13 HRs (lets add 25, since he's 33)

In 2004, he played 83 games and hit 20 HRs (lets add 17, since he's 34)

In 2005, he played 128 games and hit 35 HRs (lets add 5)

In 2006, he played 109 games and hit 27 HRs (lets add 8)

You can see from his 2005 campaign, had he been healthy in the previous years my estimates make sense. He hit 35 Hrs in just 128 games at age 35.

That's 137 home runs more, being very conservative. He hit 56 HRs back-to-back years followed by a year of 48 and his first year in the NL he hit 40. I think its safe to assume he would get better in the NL as he grew accustomed to the pitching. Meaning, he probably could more like 40-45 HRs in 2003, 35-40 HRs in 2004, and 32-38 HRs in 2005. Especially, given it was a live, live, live ball era with crappy pitching.

With what I believe are conservative estimates, he'd have 767 home runs.

  10. Griffey is probably the greatest pure player any of us will ever see. He should have broken Aaron's records but those nagging injuries screwed him.

And Selig needs to be put out to pasture. I hate that man more than words can fully express.

  11. Wind farms are insanely safe.

you think? they really mess up migratory patterns for lots of birds.

you can't win with the environment.

Not true. Wind farms kill less birds than airplanes, I believe the stat is. The idea that wind farms screw up birds is not true.

And other countries mine for oil 5000 feet deep without issue. If we want to do that we need regulations like those countries have. Its not that difficult and it has ZERO to do with environmentalists protecting ANWAR - which we should do by the way. It has everything to do with the regulatory mess Reagan started that continues to this day.

As for this whole "solar is too expensive" argument: things get cheaper when they're mass produced. Solar power for a single home is very expensive. Solar for 50 homes in a farm on cheap, desert land, is cheaper. If the country just said fuck it, we're sinking money here, we'll give subsidies like they do to farm soybeans, it would get cheap real fast. Its a catch-22, b.s. argument. It would get cheaper if it were mass produced.

To highlight part of that Freakonomics post -
First, while it’s quite true that Denmark no longer imports oil, it’s not because of wind. Instead, it’s because—sensitive topic here—it has pursued an active offshore drilling program. In fact, Denmark is an exporter of oil due to its aggressive exploration of the North Sea. But more importantly, while Denmark is indeed off the oil-import habit, it now imports all its coal, and as wind power increases these coal imports “show little sign of declining.”

The reason for this continued reliance on coal is simple: wind, being wind, isn’t always blowing. What this means for Denmark—which is heavily reliant on coal—is that demand for coal literally shifts with it. Sometimes the wind is blowing when you need it; then you use it. Sometimes it is not blowing when you need it; then you use another energy source—again, in Denmark’s case, coal.

Have you been to California's desert lands? You know how often the sun does not shine? Maybe, maybe a handful of days out of year. Solar + Wind = no fossil fuels.

  12. It's indirect and sensational saying that it's the environmentalists fault. But the bigger issue brought up is that it's safer to drill for oil on land or shallower (ie ANWAR) than it is to drill in the deep ocean.

Its safest to drill nowhere and poor money in to viable alternatives, vehicle engine reduction, better fuel standards, etc.

The USA has enough access to solar power to power the entire world. Wind farms are insanely safe. Further, speaking about just motor vehicles, the average person only drives about 30 miles/day and could get all of that, with ease, from a totally electric car.

How about instead of talking about needing to drill here, drill now - which by the way won't reduce costs at all - we talk about drill nowhere, drill never and get involved with alternatives.

Oh and lets not get in to all the wells BP has its not using.

  13. Jimenez is dirty. That said I don't think he can keep this up for much longer. Hitters will catch up with him eventually.

I'm pretty stoked the Dodgers haven't given up a run in at least 24 innings. Going to see my first Dodger game of the year Friday. Stoked to see Heyword - its a Braves' game - and hoping to see Chipper one last time.

i think he will forsure keep it up! his combination of nasty pitches and the difference between their speeds, unbelievable. plus, nl west hitting all around is horrible! its not like he came out of no where! he has been around for awhile and has shown amazing stuff! he is just now putting it all together! will he stay below1.00, probally not! haha but iforsure think he will stay under 1.5-1.75. serisouly, he is awesome to watch, nothing seems to rough his feathers ever!

I just don't see him, once he gets around to seeing all the other teams in the NL and some in the AL having this kind of dominance. That and the Dodgers can hit so the entire West isn't hitting deprived. I'm not ready to put him up with Bob Gibson quite yet.

  14. Jimenez is dirty. That said I don't think he can keep this up for much longer. Hitters will catch up with him eventually.

  15. Nobody is either offended by everything or nothing at all.

well then why act like a douche bro about it? nobody needs to say they would reach down into my spleen and pull it out. first of all, i'm no doctor, but i'm pretty sure thats impossible. 2nd of all, only an ultra violent roided out mother fucker who beats his girlfriends would even think of saying something like that. i just imagine sammy to have huge muscles, a fake tan, a popped collar, and like bad trance music to say something like that. thats just a bit extreme. i mean seriously lol. how extreme. "imma rip out your spleen!!!" actually come to think of it sammy now sounds like a juggalo. a juggalo with a jew fro, i can only imagine

I'm 5'5", 155lbs. I listen to Alkaline Trio, Jimmy Eat World, and a bunch of old school Deep Elm and emo stuff. I'm not a bro but I will happily take out my daily annoyances on anyone who feels it necessary to make disparaging remarks about Jewish people in my presence. That's about all it comes down to. Now I can see by the rest of your comments you're a bit special but be that as it may, I'd still do my best to give your nose a bit of a re-work if you were to say that stupid, stupid comment in my presence.

  16. This has no relevance, but one of my roommates from college was from a super-Jewish family on Long Island and all we did was make jokes about Jewish people. He was the most active in making these jokes and thought they were pretty funny.

Self-hating Jews aren't too rare. But then again he could just be less offended by those types of jokes than I.

i doubt you would. i was just making an observation about her being jewish and wanting more money. you have serious anger issues. go beat your girlfriend or wife or whatever you have

And I doubt you have the chutzpah to say that same thing to my face so I suppose we're calling each other liars.

But hey, just for the heck of it, go find a list of large-sum philanthropy. I would be willing to bet there's a preponderance of Jewish people or people of Jewish heritage on the list.

  17. I agree that if Kobe takes that shot, no one says a thing. I just don't think Kobe takes that shot.

Most coaches aren't happy when you could run a full 24 seconds off the clock when there's under a minute left and you have the lead and instead take an unnecessary shot two seconds into the clock.

If you're open, you shoot. The Lakers are the bigger team and should have a good chance at the rebound. Its not nearly as bad of a shot as people make it out to be. Its not a good one but its not horrible either.

  18. Yea he did the same thing in another interview recently.

The media around here has been on him hard all year. He hasnt played great but he hasnt played terrible either this season and he's always been a great player and I think he is just tired of getting ragged on by the media. I think he just doesnt wanna talk about it. Id rather have him do this than lose his mind and just go off on people haha.

Amen, who the hell is Craig Sager to question a professional shot selection. He can't even pick out a decent suit.

  19. Dodgers won't be doing anything. Their payroll is $95 million and McCourt has no money to pay a guy like Cliff Lee or Roy Oswalt, unfortunately. And I'm not sure the Dodgers could give up anything of value to get either of those guys. I also wonder if they did, could they win a World Series? I'm not so sure even with Oswalt or Lee the Dodgers could beat the Yankers, the Rays, or the Red Sox.

  20. Oh man, what a heartbreaker for the Suns.

Did you guys see the Artest interview after the game when Sager asked him why he took that shot instead of running out the clock? Artest is so ignorant he doesn't even have the nuts to say that he made a mistake, instead he just kept saying "Well, you gotta play basketball." What the fuck? hahahaha

If he hadn't scored the winner, he would have been wearing the horns for sure if the Suns ended up winning.

This drives me crazy. ARTEST WAS RIGHT! He had a wide open shot. If he nails it the game is over. The Suns were scrambling, his feet were set, everything was right for him to make it. He's a very good set shooter. He can't stop shooting because he hasn't been scoring. If Kobe takes that shot its fine, no one says a thing. Artest was right in the interview when he said he just has to play basketball. He can't think, "oh wait, I haven't been shooting well, I shouldn't take this shot." Then he'd play tentative and he'd be more likely to make a mistake. People seem to have forgotten Artest used to be a hell of a scorer.

Richardson banked in a straight on three. How often has anyone here seen that? Maybe 2-3 times all year? The Lakers played good "D" and the Suns got a nice bounce to tie the game. The Lakers returned the favor and won a game they deserved to win.
