Yes cleaning machines make a huge difference, you will freak out the first time you hear it. The only records they won’t make silent are ones that have groove damage. I own the kab ev1 http://www.kabusa.com/ev1.htm it's cheaper version of the nitty gritty ($159) in which you have to supply your own vacuum. The manual scrubbing and turning isn't that bad, I use a spare turntable to apply the fluid. As far as fully automatic machines I would go for one of the VPI's but they start at $500

It sounds to me like its warped ( I have a few records that are like that just on one side) and your neighbor probably has a better cartridge so it is able to track the record better.

I use this http://www.kabusa.com/ev1.htm It's cheap compared to the other cleaning machines and it completely gets rid of the ticks and pops.

The download link was posted today. While I am tempted to go ahead and listen to it, Im gonna wait so I can listen to it on vinyl for the first time.

I am definitely looking foward to this. Although I liked there earlier stuff better and I liked Tod more in I spy, there new stuff is still amazing.
