  1. If you wanna go used / "vintage" (depending on what year you find), the Technics SL1200MK2 is a great table. Production stopped around 2010, but they're still really easy to find and usually sell for well within your budget. If I remember correctly, I bought mine for $300, but you might be able to do far better. If you're patient, you might be able to score one locally for much cheaper.

These things were built like tanks, and they hold up very well.

I completely agree... get a 1200 you will not be dissapointed! Also if you really get the upgrade bug you can upgrade the tonearm later and get into really good sound (comparable to 2k tables). Un-upgraded the 1200 sounds superb though so dont believe any audiophile that tells you otherwise, one in good condition will wipe the floor with a debut or entry level rega.

  2. Im struggling to believe that 3500 copies of deloused on gold have sold out worldwide though (I get the silver was a more limited release but as it was taylored more for the US crowd I would assume the gold wont have sold as big in the US? maybe? cross fingers).

Considering mother love bone was 1500 and STP tiny music was 2500 and they were both sought after records globally that commanded pretty big prices in the used market and were all available in their colour variants for a while locally. Im feeling hopeful for gold deloused!

This post is really about trying to reassure myself for the next month that I have the gold... which in all honesty due to sleeping on this I probably dont :o.

  3. Im a fairly new convert to Jazz, heard Miles Davis Bitches Brew and was kinda like "what the hell is this?". Didnt really get it at the time. Then over a few drinks and other social lubricants I heard In a Silent Way, playing out from a small vintage stereo onto a deck on a clear evening around a little brazier fire. Mind Blowing.

Will be purchasing both In a Silent Way and Sketches of Spain on mofi in the next month or so, I hear they are really great versions of these two masterpieces. Will most likely get Bitches Brew and Kind of Blue when they finally arrive on mofi too.

Also I really really appreciate Sun Ra. And quite frankly dont like the big band stuff. Think Im all about the weird more freer end of the jazz spectrum?

Lastly out of curiosity I emai

Lastly out of curiosity I emailed MOV as to what source material they used since there was an original master for the CD release and a remaster done for the silver picture discs. They responded by saying they used a high res transfer of the original masters...didn't really answer my question but we'll see how it turns out haha.

Well I suppose we need to look at what the original master was like... in an interview with mix magazine Dave Schiffman (engineer chosen to work with Rick Rubin and Mars Volta on Deloused) said they brought in a vintage neve consol and used high end converters alongside protools at 96k 24bit... This along with the fact that Rick Rubin was involved makes me expect this was a fairly good master. So assuming it is indeed a hig res digital transfer of the actual master and not a bounced down version then we should be able to expect great things from this MOV release.

On top of that other than a few releases being a little noisy earlier on in their history, MOV have had a consistently good track record in recent years. Their work on the STP releases along with Mother Love Bone, Mad Season and Alice in Chains are all excellent and if Deloused is as good as those we should be in for a treat.

I am a little confused around this extra release though of Deloused thats happening by Mars Volta directly... going to be interesting to see which one is best in the end.

  5. Pulled the trigger on wowhd. Probably missed the boat on the gold vinyl but I suppose you never know... fingers crossed, though to be honest just a copy on black will suit me fine. Love this record.

Funny hadnt listened to it for maybe a year or so too and streamed it earlier this evening on spotify. Man if fricken rocks! still! Talk about dynamic changes, inertiatic ESP just sounds so full on.

  6. Well i put my mouth where my money is and contacted carpark about the quality of the pressing. Got a response fairly quickly too! Apparently they have had not a single complaint about the pressing quality or sound of the vinyl!!! Its weird as the us pressing sounds ok when it is balls to the wall loud, but it just sounds soooo muddy at lower levels and it is noticeable over the digital version.

They have no plans whatsoever to address the sub par sound. No mention of if anyone even bothered to give it a listen or compare it to the digital. Such as shame as the record although kinda lo fi sounding is so good! Oh well will just have to listen to it loud when I do.

Maybe people who object to the sound should drop them a line via email, might encourage them to take some ownership on this one (or not).

  7. First play through of side 1 of the us press of this and it sounded absolutely terrible! I mean dull and lifeless, muddy, dirty whatever it sounded like shit. Side 2 is a bit cleaner but really this is pretty below par. Im pretty fierce about it to be honest. Not sure if this is the lofi style they were going for but it has no edge to anything, drums, guitar, even vocals sounds muddy.

I would not purchase this album on vinyl until they get their act together and repress this properly. Now I need to really compare this vinyl release to the digital copy. If the digital is a whole lot less muddy than this I will contacting carpark about it. This is a joke really. DO NOT BUY THE US PRESS!

Edit: Ok just listened to the digital of this, digital is still a little murky but the vinyl is definitely worse, recommend avoiding the us press at the moment, will send carpark an email shortly.

  8. Wow had a busy week and havent made it on here and boom, one of my all time favs and wishlist lps is being pressed! Very happy! Hopefully MOV doesnt screw the pooch on the artwork as it really is a big part of this record.

Also it does sound fairly plausible that those Euro bootlegs came off the same stampers these did... similar area (Europe) and similar cover setup it seems... along with the fact that MOV were probably pressing or leading up to pressing around the same time, interesting. Bet MOV were pissed if it is the case  haha.

Will hopefully preorder this wednesday, cross fingers I get a gold copy but it might be a bit late it seems (will preorder off wowhd as they do free shipping to NZ, or at least cover it in their costs).

    Damn excited right now.

  9. Mine arrived this afternoon, very well done. Cover is a little over saturated (not as bad as purple though). Insert is on nice thick paper.

Vinyl is light blue marbled, really like this colour and it ties in so nicely with the light blue colour of the water in the cover.

Will play after I finish with my other new record that arrived today - bad religion - the grey race (also on blue vinyl).

Edit: well listened to it, and its great. Very quiet and well mastered, though I dont think it has quite the same punch as purple... Also does anyone remember press play being as long as it is on this release? It feels longer for some reason.

  10. my copy of the grey race on blue vinyl arrived today (all the way in little old New Zealand). It is great. Cover is nicely finished as with insert. Vinyl is solid blue and flat. Music is impressive! Very quiet vinyl and flat. Couldn't ask for anything more really, very happy. And it arrived pretty quick considering I chose the cheapest form of shipping and during the holiday period!

Recommend it if you like this album.

  11. Or you could just get a fucking AT120E and be done with it.

Would imagine the AT120E would be a step sideways to be honest, om30 or 40 would own the AT120E... could buy a 440mLA and would then be getting somewhere, better yet a 150mlx if budget allows.

Any of the ATs would be a better match for the 1200 than any of the oms - compliance wise. The 150mlx is really a great cartridge for a moving magnet, clear vivid highs and amazing tracking, and the 1200 would handle it nicely. Food for thought I guess.
