  1. I should probably reserve judgement until pro reviewers get a hold of it, but my knee-jerk reaction is that the chassis is probably worth more than it's contents.

I don't want to say this is gimmicky, but it seems like a lot of the people that have shown interest in this product in the comments section of U-Turn's social media pages have mentioned getting a Pluto that matches their Orbit, with many even suggesting that they make them available in all the colors available for the plinth.

There were others that said the wanted to support U-Turn given their satisfaction with the company and their service. Which is not a bad thing for the company I guess since it shows that they have managed to build customer loyalty and gain a nice little following. But it does make you wonder if people are sacrificing performance for style or the novelty (maybe thats a better word) of having a preamp to match their tt.

There are just so many great preamps in the $100 range, this seems like a mistake. maybe at $50, sure, but does anyone have faith they can make a preamp that sounds better than something like an entry model cambridge azur?

Good point. I was looking at it from the completely opposite direction of how it would stack up against cheaper alternatives, but yes at 100 dollars you're not too far off from a Cambridge 551.

Given that the biggest thing the Orbit had going for it was its affordability compared to the closest Pro-Ject/Music Hall/Rega tt by a significant amount, it seems like they may have got the pricing wrong on this one.

  2. If you don't mind me asking, how confident are you that It'll be $99? I'm asking because I don't know if you got that information from a source you may have or just speculation. On their Instagram they have just replied that it will be under a 100 but thats about it.

Nevermind, I was lurking though their Facebook and saw a reply to a comment where they said it will probably be $99.

I am still curious to see where it lands in the market. At $99 it'll be twice the price of the Art DJ that they've been hyping up ever since their inception. I personally don't have a problem or any experience with the Art, mind you, but again, it'll be kinda weird to see them push their product for twice the price after they have been so insistent on the DJ Pre and how good of a value it is.

I thought they would have price it a little closer to the Pro-Ject Phono Box MM, which can be had for 80 dollars at a couple of places. I think there is another Pro-Ject that can also be had for a little cheaper.

But who knows, maybe this thing will have specs/performace that make it worth the extra cash.

  3. That is true. I'd be saving about $50 if I ordered the Orbit Plus, rather than by those two parts separately at some point. And here's to thinking this would be somewhat cheap. But, after reading some reviews , I'm going to have to go with it.

Many people have had that same line of thought, myself included. The $179 price tag really jumps out at you, but once you start looking at the possible upgrades, it can quickly shoot up.

Ultimately, the price that I paid for my table was well worth it, and much better than anything I could have gotten for that price. But even the Orbit Plus, which comes out to $320 shipped, gets many people thinking twice, especially since that puts you into Pro-Ject Debut, or if you're lucky and have a discount code Debut Carbon, territory.

  4. So I'm thinking about ordering this turntable. I went to order one from the website and saw the custom options you can get, and I was slightly overwhelmed. Are there any upgrades/options I should definitely get (ones that stood out to me were the Q-up, acrylic platter, and/or even a better cartridge.) Now when I started to add these options, it really started to add up price wise. I'm just wondering what options would really be worth it as this will be a beginners table, as I can upgrade the less necessary options later or even get a better table/setup down the road. Any advice at all would be appreciated!

Dabeeps, the orbit plus will just be an acrylic platter and grado black cartridge over the standard. Cartridge and platter will add to sound characteristics if you want to spend the money now, but the q up is just to take the needle off when your record is finished, so you don't have to get up and do it yourself. You kinda have to decide if that's worth $60 to you. And something you can order almost anywhere for that same price. Where as upgrading the acrylic platter later will cost you a little more than doing it now. Either way I'd suggest at least getting the grado black cartridge now.

Completely agree with all of this, dabeeps. The Q-up is not worth it, in my opinion. Though if it is something you desire, you can always add it later for the exact same price, as xxsilence mentioned.

Upgrading the platter and/or cartridge through U-Turn will definitely save you a few dollars as opposed to adding them on later ($90 vs $75 for the platter, and $70 vs $45 for the Grado Black, for example). And again, both of these will have an effect on the performance of the table, as opposed to the Q-Up, which is strictly a convienence feature.  I personally ordered my Orbit with a Grado Black and have no regrets so far.

  5. Okay so i got shipping confirmation today (finally..) however about a month ago i asked if they could change the color from black to blue and they said they did but it says black. And i upgraded the cart a few weeks ago (which is already paid for) and they gave me the wrong one.... This is not my week.

I wouldn't worry. I also upgraded the cartridge after placing my order, yet the shipping confirmation, as well as the receipt in the box had the old cartridge listed even though my table came with the upgraded cartridge.

  6. My Orbit was just delivered yesterday. As luck would have it, my receiver gave out yesterday as well! Finally, after some research and diagnostics, I was able to get it up and running, and I was able to test out my Orbit this afternoon.

I can definitely say it was worth the wait. I was considering going in a different route, but I'm glad I stuck it out.  I am really satisfied with the fit and finish of the table, and U-Turn in general have been very helpful throughout the process. I know everyone here that is anxiously waiting will be just as happy to receive theirs as well.

  7. Purchase date was March 8th. The original estimated ship date was the week of May 5th, and then it was pushed back to the 19th, and just recently pushed back to the 26th.

From what people have posted on here though, it seems like turnaround time will continue to go decrease. I know somebody on here purchased theirs about a month after I did, yet their delivery estimate is only a week or two after the estimated date on mine.

Anyway, the excitement is really starting to kick in now!

  8. this confused me a lot and probably because its late and i havent slept in 2 full days but i understood the last sentence and i will email them right now.

question though. can i only do this for the black? is the grado blue any better? or not really worth the extra money?

My fault, I probably misinterpreted one of your post. Also, I thought you were interested only in the Black. But, yes, you can get the Grado Blue as well. I can't really say which to go with, but you have both options open to you.

If you haven't already e-mailed them, you could also ask them for a price, after your discount code is applied, on either upgrade. Once you get a better idea of how much each upgrade is, you can decide and then let them know which one you'd like.

  9. well i dont think that im gonna go right ahead and buy the black or the blue once i get it. i assume those codes last quite a while so i'll probably just see how the cart i got sounds before i decide anything

Your plan is not bad at all. One thing to consider, though, is that it would be slightly more expensive to buy the cartridge outright than to upgrade your current order. As Kevin mentioned, you can email them and change your order.

I originally got the Audio-Techinica AT-95E (the +$25 option), but when they sent me a $10 code on my first delay, I used it towards the Grado Black and ended up only having to pay an extra $10 (since the Grado Black adds $45 when you use the build-your-own function).

By comparison, U-Turn sells the Grado Black for $70 plus 5 for shipping. So with your $15 coupon, you'd be looking at $60 to get the Grado down the line, whereas if you already ordered the AT-95E (which if I read correctly is what your current order has), you'd only have to pay an extra 5 dollars to get the Grado right now.

Edit: I was looking through the store and realized the stock cartridge sells for $25, so I realized maybe that is what you meant when you said you got the $25 one. In that case it would be an additional $30 to upgrade to the Grado Black if you modified your order.

  10. Where are you in California? Amoeba is doing 20% turntables on Monday, not sure if it's online or in store only.

I actually received their e-mail, but I appreciate the thought. I meant to post that on here, though I wasn't sure what the appropriate thread is. For those interested, they are also giving away a tote bag with vinyl care goods, which I'm guessing is a brush or something of the like.

Unfortunately, I'm about 3 1/2 hours away from either Amoeba location, and the promo is in-stores only.  For anyone that is interested, Woodwind and Brasswind has a code for 15% off of purchases of $199 or more. I tried checking out, but the code did not work with the Pro-Ject. However, I used their chat service to talk with a customer rep. He confirmed that the item was eligible and apologized for the inconvenience, and then said that if I called their 800 number, they would be able to help me complete my transaction.

I havent completed the transaction because as I mentioned earlier, I want to contact U-Turn first. The promo is also valid until the 28th(wednesday), so it still leaves ample time.

  11. They're super helpful and easy. I emailed them because there was a chance I was going to have to cancel my order because I needed some emergency funds. So I asked if they could still cancel this close to ship date and they emailed back and said yeah, just let them know if I needed to and to give them my name, order number, and PayPal email.

I really appreciate the feedback Kevin! The guys at U-Turn have been very helpful the couple of times I have contacted them, so I was expecting them to be helpful in this regard, but I didn't want to assume anything, ya know?

I'm holding off until Tuesday as it is. I don't want to buy another TT just to find out my Orbit shipped out before I could contact them.

  12. for those of you that have ordered a custom turntable from U-Turn, how close to the 'week of' was it once you received your table?

I emailed to get a status update and see if I was still on target to receive mine based off of the delivery calendar estimate, and I received a very non-committal response explaining that it is merely an estimate and many factors can alter the actual time the table leaves the shop.

please note, this isn't a slight on the company at all, I'm simply trying to get a sample of others' experience...

I'm currently in the 'week of' and am waiting for a tracking number. The delays have been a bit disappointing, but the customer service has more than made up for it. I share the sentiment of others in that these guys are doing the best they can, and I am very much appreciative of their hard work.
