  1. Dr Jimmeh and Mr Jim... (Google Quadrophenia) I suppose logic and science are unwelcome in the face of belief...as it ever was... Sorry, just being a smartass...fn newbies.
  2. If you're not far from northern VA, I have a vintage Pioneer PL 12D I would like to sell. Needs a new belt...thats about $10. From what I've read below, will also need a preamp for modern equipment. Vintage Audio Technica cartridge included. Both circa mid 1970s.
  3. I've given this some more thought, and some internet research, FWIW. No doubt thar new discs could have remenants of the release compounds that are used in pressings, but since these are usually silicone oils, they might actually be more beneficial to leave on the surfaces in the long run. Very slippery and therefore provide lubricant to the grooves. Very unreactive, so wont hurt any of the components of the stylus either. Antimicrobials? What kind? They'd need to be pretty reactive to affect any of the diamond, cantilever arm (aluminum, or even more exotic/less reactive) or the glue, where present, which holds them together. From what I can tell, the glues are proprietary, so its difficult to assess their chemical resistance, but its likely pretty high.
  4. Well, if you keep them in a sleeve, they don't really get that dirty.
  5. Might have found a buyer locally...could be a record shop owner, who knows.
  6. Well over 300. Just poured over them the other night trying to match records with sleeves. Most sleeves are generic though. It's mostly C&W, like 50s to late 60s. A few Elvis, Ray Charles...you get the idea. Old juke stuff.
  7. I'm a chemist, so explain to me what species or compounds eat PVC and diamond.
  8. Oh yeah, right. I'll sit down and make a list of them all.
  9. Dawn plus rinse with distilled...all gone. BTW, if I'm not mistaken, the stylus is made of diamond...pretty tough and unreactive. I know, I know, record collectors/audiophiles need their comfort zones. How many stylii has anyone actually worn out?
  10. I thought 7s died in the early 70s
  11. Could spend 2-3x on shipping. Besides, its clear that demographics are against me. Who is interested in old music...except those older than me? Crap, they're all in homes by now...well, not the Springsteen fans...though they should be
  12. Cleaning is over-rated. No amount of cleaning fixes worn grooves.
  13. When I was a young audiophile, there was some kind of "ionic" generator that you'd mount near your cartridge that would allegedly neutralize the static charge buildup...LOL
