  1. I haven't gone through this thread, but I thought this was the best place to ask. Somewhat interested in start a distro and was wondering if I could get some advice about it, tips, how it's done, factors, and everything else involved.

I don't have experience running a distro, but I do run a small label and I'd say the general idea is to get in touch with labels, buy vinyl from them at wholesale/distro rates, sell them for a profit. We need more distros, they have all basically went away.

I think a smart idea would be to buy from labels early on and get first pressings, then if one day that variant sells out, you're almost guaranteed to sell your copies. Also, once you're big enough you can ask labels for an exclusive variant that only you stock in your store.

Another good idea is to not get greedy and charge like $17 for an LP you got for $8, keep it reasonable and you'll gain loyal customers with repeat orders.

Captives release new ep "Afterimage" on August 20th

Captives will release their second EP, "Afterimage" on August 20th via Reveille Records.

FFO: Balance and Composure, Brand New, Seahaven, Taking Back Sunday, Crime in Stereo

Captives are back and with more crushing heaviness than ever. Afterimage, Captives’ second release, features powerfully atmospheric guitar work, intoxicating melodic harmonies, brooding drum beats, and crushingly emotional vocals from dual-vocalists Jeffery Mudgett and Trevor Bookout.

These five new tracks showcase the growth and evolution Captives has accomplished as a promising band on the rise and further builds the theme established on their 2012 EP, My Eyes Are OpenAn afterimage is a visual image retained after looking at something vivid, an image you can still see after you've turned away or closed your eyes. Even after minutes the illusion will remain if the image was distinct enough. Afterimage represents still seeing and feeling those things that are no longer with us, when only an impression remains.

Afterimage recorded, mixed, and mastered by Stephen Hawkes (American Me, I Am The Ocean, Exotic Animal Petting Zoo) at Interlace Audio in Portland, Oregon.

Afterimage is set to release on August 20, 2013 via Reveille Records. Pre-orders will be up for the 10" vinyl version of the release on the same day.

    Track list:
    1. All I Have
    2. Broken Oars
    3. Leaving
    4. To Forget
    5. Squander

    A word from Reveille Records

“Punk didn’t die. It matured. It grew up. With its maturity came progression. The Chronicle is classic punk rock for the new age with tight guitars, a strong rhythm section, and vocals that hit so hard you’ll think the band is standing with you in your basement.

Protagonist’s The Chronicle was released nearly 5 years years ago and since then the punk rock wave has ebbed into new territory. With pop punk, 90s revival, and gruff punk taking over now is the perfect time to bring punk back to its roots. The Chronicle is what punk rock sounds like at its core. Classic punk rock will never go out of style, never fade, and certainly never die as long as there are albums like this continue to resurface every once in a while in order to ground the rapidly changing fads that are always apparent in the punk scene. And that is why I am proud and extremely excited for Reveille Records to be a part of releasing Protagonist’s The Chronicle  on vinyl for the first time ever.”

    - Bill Leary of Reveille Records

    Press Buzz:

On The Chronicle, [Protagonist] drink deeply from the essence of summer nights, and then regurgitate on rowdy numbers “Light The Fuse,” “1095 Days,” and “IAMTHEGHOST.” - AbsolutePunk.net

After all, their debut Paper + Plastick release, The Chronicle, is more than worthy of praise and recognition and should have made it on many year end lists”  - ThePunkSite.com

  6. Ok VC, so I'm looking to do my first pressing. The place I'm looking to license from says they normally wave master and publishing royalties and ask for 50% of the pressing. That seems like a lot to me but as this is my first go round I'm not sure whether I'm getting a better or worse deal than just an upfront licensing fee. I'm not sure that the demand is there to do a massive pressing of the two albums I'm looking at and was just planning on an initial run of 500 or less for each. I was looking to just do this as a hobby on the side and charge cost for the records, not taking my time into account. If I give them 50% of the pressing obviously it will instantly double the price I need to charge for each individual record and then I'm worried that they can price cheaper and with the limited demand would possibly make it impossible for me to break even in selling my copies. Thoughts, advice, suggestions?

Well 50% does seem high. I don't know how'd you make your money back that way, especially with a small run of 500 or less. Not to knock your effort, but having a label as a "hobby" and expecting to break even on your releases isn't going to work out well. Selling just 250 records is hard work. You have to put tons of time/effort into promoting the release, if people don't know it's available they can't buy it, plus you have to build up your labels cred so that people feel safe order from you. And if your band is an unknown, you also have to build up their following and make sure that they're steady touring/promoting themselves in order to gain attention and in return have the ability to sell more albums.

Also doing a small run is silly sometimes because often the difference in price for a press of 300 to 500 is only a few hundred dollars and the potential profits goes way up because you have almost double the records to sell.

I'm not sure why you'd consider licensing material and then only press a few hundred records. It seems like a waste of money. I would assume if you're putting out money to release licensed material on vinyl that you'd choose one with the ability to sell at least 500. I don't know, maybe try and have your first release be from a band that just released an album or will be soon and get that pressed. This way you don't have to deal with licensing fees.

I didn't mean to sound discouraging, but moving records is not easy and requires a lot of effort. It may seem like a casual hobby, but if your aim is to break even, it'll be really hard if you take a backseat approach. I'm just saying because it is an investment that'll cost you ~$2,000 and that's not a fun amount of money to lose.

  7. Boxer kicked off their Spring tour the other day with Featherweight. Check out their upcoming dates and be sure to catch a show if you can. They've got new merch on tour with them and will be playing their new songs off the Split EP with Eyes Wide.

You can pick up the digital download of their newest release "Boxer/Eyes Wide - Split EP" here for just $4. Or on CD here for just $5.

  8. Hey man,

Here's our e-mail address: [email protected]

We can definitely do better on shipping costs on that, the way our shipping works on the site is a bit funky with international orders. So send me an e-mail and I think we can do it for like half of that, maybe even less.

Thanks again for the support man!

I just tried buying 2 LP's and it's saying that shipping would be $34 to Canada. Any way you could help me out?
