Thanks so much everybody! These type of gigs are the coolest. Especially the situation I pulled myself in to. Everything's paid for while I'm there - flight, lodging, meals - and I get paid on top of it.
Don't get me wrong about the Elvis stuff. I'm a big fan of the earliest 50's to mid-60's stuff. Most of the period thereafter makes me cringe. Especially "Moody Blue", which I'm fairly convinced is the worst song I've ever heard.

check in and post when yours comes in. I think it said early March? I just read that they raised over $100k for Slim yesterday on those 250 EPs. That's amazing.
That's great to hear - I'll probably just PM you. Hopefully that'll put a huge dent in his medical bills.
-
They're big in the U.S., but I've heard they're HUGE in certain parts of Europe. Roots rock and 50's music, too. I don't really knock people who like it. That's their preference. If they enjoy it, the more power to 'em.

in Buffalo we have a pretty good Elvis impersonator and he's at like every major event in the city. i bet there's a butt load of money in it.
Definitely. People (who are also terrible at it) make tons. That's how a lot of musicians also get sucked into it. It's easy money, the repertoire never changes, and a large demographic of people love it. Those are three things you'll be hard-pressed to find with an original band. I've always done both. I started playing in a cover band with my Dad when I was 10 years old - just had our 10 year anniversary 2 weeks ago. Once you get the material down, it's like clockwork. It's hard to say no to someone who can offer you anywhere from $100 to $2,000 a night for a maximum of 4 hours of work.
-
A lot of people use the impersonation stuff for a source of income. I work part time at a lighting company to supplement the Music stuff. I also just formed a post-hardcore band and play in a bunch of other stuff, too. A lot of the impersonation fans are absolutely fucking nuts.
-
congrats.. that's awesome.
and not to take anything away, but can i take a moment to ask why elvis impersonators are a thing? and a really, really, really, big thing at that?
I wonder the same thing. I'm not a fan from the standpoint of someone who goes to shows, but am for trying to make a career out of music. I dropped out of High School to play in bands. So far, the best paying gigs have been studio session work and a Beatle Tribute band I played George in for a year and a half. This, too.
which one are you? haha
also, CONGRATS!
I'm on drums!
-
Yeah.
In an odd turn of events, the 50's roots rock band I play (http://www.facebook.com/LanceLipinskyAndTheLovers) in has been asked to back up an Elvis guy for 3 nights next week on Late Show with David Letterman (February 4th, 5th, and 6th).
I'm fairly scared.
If anyone's interested, here's the promo video we half-assedly shot. The piano player and Elvis in this clip are from the Chicago cast of 'Million Dollar Quartet' and the horns are from 'JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound'. Nothing like cheesy Elvis stuff.
Primary thing. I'll be in town for a week. Anything cool in NYC? I'm specifically looking for records and music gear - drums, preferably. Food, too!

Now i'm off to go auction off some stuff to help pay for this.
Yeah. This.
-
Got one! I had no plans to buy one until they announced that Paul, Tommy, and Chris got together and signed all of them. Couldn't resist after that. ended up buying one of the cheaper ones. i watched the auctions all day.
Did anyone else grab one?
I did. About three times over my normal comfort zone spending-wise, but I figure if the money's going to Slim...
Got #161. $330 or so. Yikes.
-
-
So that was you who paid that much. Wowser.
Yeah. I had a friend bidding for me - I was on my way back from a practice (it's about an hour drive from Chicago to my place). He'd said it jumped a ton in the remaining minute or so.
-
Alright. I'm extremely curious as to what I'll get now. Snagged the First Offense Test off of eBay for way too much a few nights ago. Got paid from a show. I shouldn't be allowed to use eBay.

Is Dave Nobody selling merch for Masked Intruder again?
Don't know who that is, so yes. Probably. Maybe.
-
The copies on tour with them are normal black. Bought one in hopes even though I have a color on the way. Saw them at Metro a few weeks ago. Great set. The cop/merch guy is fantastic. Walked around stage for the first 4 songs flipping people off.
-
I got a bump, motherfucker!
-
After reading this, I messaged the seller and he agreed to up the shipping. Feeling a little bit better. Hooray!
-
The problem seems to be sending TO Germany, not from...
Still enough to make me worry. I've had two problems before with records from Germany. Replacements - Let It Be on blue (never showed up) and an Amy Winehouse record for my girlfriend at the time that came with all corners forced inward.
Especially with this being the most I've spent on a record ever, fingers crossed.
-
Well, this is fucking cool to find out. I just won the live Jawbreaker LP from a seller in Germany.
Great.
-
Feel free to make offers. Could use $100 or so. Once I hit it, I'll stop.
-
-
1 sold about a month ago for 110ppd. People are keeping these things.
Wish I would've caught that!
Still, willing to pay fair. If you have one, PM me and we'll discuss.
-
Will pay fair.
-
Let me know if you have it - let's work a deal out. PM me.
I just found out I'm going to be on David Letterman. What do I do? Anything cool in NYC?

No way! That's a great connection to have, I'm sure!! I've heard that from a few people about him. It'd be cool to grab a picture with him. I've only recently started doing that. I'm really curious as to who the other guests will be each night. This whole thing's insane.
