  1. Congrats on the gig! That's awesome for you.

FYI, my dad works for CBS specifically on the Letterman show, has pretty much said for as long as I can remember that dude is a total a-hole, but that's just one man's opinion. I remember back when Brand New was on, he held up their CD backwards...not cool. Though it has been a pretty sweet deal for me, I have gotten to go to any of those Live on Letterman tapings I've wanted to..

I definitely second the Brooklyn Brewery, that place is awesome.

No way! That's a great connection to have, I'm sure!! I've heard that from a few people about him. It'd be cool to grab a picture with him. I've only recently started doing that. I'm really curious as to who the other guests will be each night. This whole thing's insane.

  2. Thanks so much everybody! These type of gigs are the coolest. Especially the situation I pulled myself in to. Everything's paid for while I'm there - flight, lodging, meals - and I get paid on top of it.

Don't get me wrong about the Elvis stuff. I'm a big fan of the earliest 50's to mid-60's stuff. Most of the period thereafter makes me cringe. Especially "Moody Blue", which I'm fairly convinced is the worst song I've ever heard.

  3. in Buffalo we have a pretty good Elvis impersonator and he's at like every major event in the city.  i bet there's a butt load of money in it.

Definitely. People (who are also terrible at it) make tons. That's how a lot of musicians also get sucked into it. It's easy money, the repertoire never changes, and a large demographic of people love it. Those are three things you'll be hard-pressed to find with an original band. I've always done both. I started playing in a cover band with my Dad when I was 10 years old - just had our 10 year anniversary 2 weeks ago. Once you get the material down, it's like clockwork. It's hard to say no to someone who can offer you anywhere from $100 to $2,000 a night for a maximum of 4 hours of work.

  4. congrats.. that's awesome.

and not to take anything away, but can i take a moment to ask why elvis impersonators are a thing? and a really, really, really, big thing at that?

I wonder the same thing. I'm not a fan from the standpoint of someone who goes to shows, but am for trying to make a career out of music. I dropped out of High School to play in bands. So far, the best paying gigs have been studio session work and a Beatle Tribute band I played George in for a year and a half. This, too.

    which one are you? haha

    also, CONGRATS!

    I'm on drums!

  5. Yeah.

In an odd turn of events, the 50's roots rock band I play (http://www.facebook.com/LanceLipinskyAndTheLovers) in has been asked to back up an Elvis guy for 3 nights next week on Late Show with David Letterman (February 4th, 5th, and 6th).

    I'm fairly scared.

If anyone's interested, here's the promo video we half-assedly shot. The piano player and Elvis in this clip are from the Chicago cast of 'Million Dollar Quartet' and the horns are from 'JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound'. Nothing like cheesy Elvis stuff.

Primary thing. I'll be in town for a week. Anything cool in NYC? I'm specifically looking for records and music gear - drums, preferably. Food, too!

  6. Got one!  I had no plans to buy one until they announced that Paul, Tommy, and Chris got together and signed all of them.  Couldn't resist after that.  ended up buying one of the cheaper ones.  i watched the auctions all day.

    Did anyone else grab one?

I did. About three times over my normal comfort zone spending-wise, but I figure if the money's going to Slim...

Got #161. $330 or so. Yikes.

  8. The problem seems to be sending TO Germany, not from...

Still enough to make me worry. I've had two problems before with records from Germany. Replacements - Let It Be on blue (never showed up) and an Amy Winehouse record for my girlfriend at the time that came with all corners forced inward.

Especially with this being the most I've spent on a record ever, fingers crossed.
