  1. I signed up before they announced what the first package was going to be. I was under the impression that it was going to be similar to other subscriptions where you wouldn't know what was coming until you got it. Within a few days they announced the MONO Icky but they had already taken my money. I like that they announce the packages in advance, but there's a part of me that wishes it was a mystery each quarter. I've been happy with it all except for the Wanda package (which I sold)

I was with you until you said you were going to be sick. I can't relate to that. I really don't think that $240/yr is unreasonable for what we acutually got.

I've been a Vault member since the beginning.

    16 x $60 = $960

    I'm gonna be sick.

    Anybody else?

  2. I get the impression that you are one of the "old timers" that you reference.

I can't see how ebay and online shopping has killed the record business. If anything, having readily available product and information has helped the business of collecting and informed buyers. A small time business owner (mom&pop) is having a hard time keeping up with the changing landscape because they are unable or unwilling to change along with it. If they knew the value of their product, they wouldn't have trouble selling anything. But most of them are using outdated price guides and sales models. Back in the day most towns only had, at best, a few options for buying records. They operated essentially like a monopoly in which they could charge a substantially higher price. Now in our current competitive environment, where there are an endless amount of vendors, the prices come back down to fair market value. They are now dealing with informed consumers who are unwilling to pay 30% more for something that they can get cheaper elsewhere. And, as most of us know already, vinyl is the only physical medium that is showing signs of growth. You can feel free to blame mp3's and online streaming services for the decline of overall sales, not ebay, discogs, amazon, or (insert online vendor here)

  3. Nothing will correctly reflect the true value of anything; you are correct. What economics and statistics try to do is eliminate most of the variables and provide you with a figure that best represents your hypothesis (record value in this case). What ebay does is provide you with reasonable data to come to a reasonable conclusion about the market damand and supply and consequently the value of any said collectable.

When you have sellers selling low or buyers buying high outside of ebay, or other online marketplaces, that is called an uninformed buyer or seller. Would you buy a movie, CD, or book from Barnes and noble for 30% more in the store when you can easily buy the same item elsewhere for less? I wouldn't, but there are people who do because they happen to be in the store and don't feel like or know how to find a better price.

You can transfer that same uninformed status to those who write and use price guides because those are written by people, which is nothing more than adding another variable to the equation. The price guide writers are not a good representation of the market and do not account for things like repressings, time of year (christmas, rsd, etc.), band hype. Also, maybe some of you may remember the Beckett baseball card guide that was notorious for accused of price fixing? The writer(s) would raise the value so that the insiders could sell high and then they would lower the price so the insiders could buy low. These reasons are why there is no good way to value a record except for collecting hard data such as pervious sales history.

My lack of training in economics aside, ebay, though a nice tool, still doesn't correctly reflect true value. It's only one avenue, right? I can sell plenty of stuff for less or more outside of it and create a perceived value based on my locale.

  4. You don't need a reasonable number of sales to determine the value. You just need 1 sale because even if there are a small number of sales that would suggest a limited supply available for purchase (not pressed). Then we would be completely reliant on the demand for the record. These are interrelated. There are two sides to the argument. The supply side and the demand side.

Small Supply with Large Demand = Higher Price

Large Supply with Large Demand = Equilibrium Price (~MSRP)

Small Supply with Small Demand = Equilibrium Price (~MSRP)

Large Supply with Small Demand = Lower Price

Regarding statistical outliers, If they are far enough from the median price and do not truely represent the sample, they can be thrown out and we would then assume a lesser confidence that our projected value is accurate.

As long as you have a resonable mean.  The problem with eBay is it can create crazy outliers.  If one person pays $300, it doesn't mean there is a market for that record at $300 - it just means there was one person prepared to pay that, and there may never be another one.  So if there are a reasonable number of sales, you can absolutely determine an approximate value from eBay.

  5. How can you say that ebay isn't a true indicator of value. Value is defined by what something is worth to someone. In this case we get an assigned monetary value to an object. Auction style listings allow for the market to drive the selling price and allows the seller to capture most if not all of the consumer surplus found on an economic demand curve diagram.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_surplus

Take the mean average of recent sold listings and you have an approximate value of your record; or you can go to popsike which has done all of the work already for you.

Unfortunately, most modern records aren't listed in price guides. So, things like completed ebay listings are the only way to show a record's "value". But, ebay is an auction site, so it isn't a true indicator of value because things fluctuate so much due to the pressure of 'winning' the item.

  6. it says there's a preorder price guarantee.

you should probably find out more about that.

Pre-order Price Guarantee! Order now and if the Amazon.ca price decreases between your order time and the end of the day of the release date, you'll receive the lowest price.

So the sooner you order, the better chance you have of paying the absolute lowest price. Although, I doubt it will go lower than this.

  7. I thought $10 to PA was bad for the bundle with the 7". I can't believe they're charging that much to ship to some of you. I suppose maybe it has something to do with the poster...idk

Did anyone notice the description for the deluxe bundle as being a litho wrapped gatefold? There is no mention in any of the other descriptions; including the bands website. Do you think that is exclusive LP packaging for this bundle only?

  8. Sorry.....
