Upgrade for Music Hall MMF 2.2?

Recommended Posts

Hey there, VC.

I've owned my Music Hall MMF 2.2 for about a year now, and I'm getting pretty bored with the sound of it. I feel this could be fixed by upgrading a cartridge, or maybe finding a new table all together, I don't know.

I'm looking at the Ortofon 2M Blue, and AT440MLa. I'd like to keep to MM so I don't have to do a platter/weight upgrade.

I'd like to buy locally since I don't trust myself with replacing a cartridge (read about weak wires on the Music Hall).

These are the brands I have to choose from:

Audio-Technica
Benz-Micro
Clearaudio
Esoteric Sound
Michell
Musical Surroundings
Ortofon
Pfanstiehl
Pro-Ject
Shure
SME
Sony
Sumiko
VPI

I have about 200 dollars to spend at max, but I'd really like to keep it at 150 or so. I'd like to have an analytical sound, not so much of a casual listener sound. Just an emphasis on accuracy. It'd also be nice to have a cartridge that is durable, I'm unsure if this is a common concern (never have messed with swapping carts), but I wouldn't want to buy something unreliable.

Thanks in advance.

Good thing you listed VPI for your $200 budget for a cartridge. Huh?

I'd imagine the OP copied this from a local place listing all their product manufacturers and may or may not have an idea of who they are. No need for this type of response. Why not suggest something helpful or just not leave a reply?

I'd love to help with a suggestion but don't know much about any of these. I've heard good things about the Ortofone Blue.

It's probably best to go to your local store, ask them what will work and listen to some if possible.

Thank you for the helpful reply. I'm probably just going to bring my table to the shop. A little intimidating going to those stores sometimes, with plenty of equipment worth more than my car.

P.S. I did just copy and paste the list from the local retailer, I didn't even notice VPI was on there, I'm well aware they make very high end products.

P.S.S. Thank you jdtg for keeping this a friendly environment, I agree that there is no place for some of the smart-assery I see on most forums.

To answer your question of "why not...":

I don't see you post much in this forum, so you may or may not know about the over abundance of duplicate threads asking about the same needs in the same price ranges. There is also a beginners thread, where there are many, many discussions and recommendations, which I consider a safe zone for people who, for example, cut and paste links to equipment they know nothing about, or haven't even looked at.

And why get such hurt feelings over it any way? I didn't make a personal attack. The OP did something foolish. I pointed it out in a snarky, sarcastic manner, which I am not apologetic for. There were a lot of things about that list that are lazy and sloppy, if the OP had cared to do any research for him/herself, he/she at the least would have posted a better list, at best he/she would have found the numerous other threads and had an answer and would have never had to lazily cut and paste a list he/she knew nothing about.

-

I usually don't post at all in these threads for the reasons above, but that list was so uninformed, it was obvious the OP didn't even look into what was being pasted. Instead of coddling the laziness, and turning my statement into an attack, why not just let my statement stand as a mild joke and not say anything at all?
