Speaker placement help [Updated with pictures]

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm upgrading from a borrowed all in one turntable to a U-Turn Orbit as a christmas present, so the rest of the gear is on me. I'm going to pick up the Art DJPre II for the phono preamp, a set of Flaunce SX6's and an SMSL SA50 amp. Now, I've got a pretty tiny room (7 1/2' by 11') which really limits my speaker placement options but I still want to create a not-shit soundstage if at all possible. I'll probably be listening most of the time from the floor or in bed. I have no idea where to place my speakers. So my questions are:

Do I need any extra cords aside from what is included with the speakers/preamp/turntable?
What would be your idea of optimal speaker placement in such a small room?

When I get banana clips, do I get closed or open screw type? Are there wires with the clips on them already?
Am I screwed due to my room size?

Here is a diagram of my room and some pictures to help explain—

You can see, I don't have much to work with space wise. Thankfully, I'll be moving out by next fall and I'll have more room to do a proper set up.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Okay, two things to consider:

1. Scrap the speakers/amp combo. You'll get much better performance with some active monitors, especially for the size of your room.

These are currently on sale and a superb deal: http://www.samash.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_10001_10051_3461278_-1____ProductDisplayErrorView

This is a solid alternative: http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-Premium-Powered-Desktop-Speaker/dp/B000VKEFMS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1419329601&sr=8-6&keywords=audioengine

But for that price I'd go for the first ones.

2. In such a small space a really good idea would be to wall-mount these, preferably higher up (close to the ceiling) and directed downwards. Of course this is only possible if you actually have space on your walls, but from those pics it's impossible to tell. Maybe take some pics with some better lighting, it'll be easier to figure out how to position everything. Side question - do you hate light? :)

2.a. If you do get the chance to take some solid pics, snap a few shots of the detolf cabinet. Looks like there could be some cool stuff in there, if they'd only be visible...

YES okay, cool. My original plan was to go with either:

or

So I would be fine going that route. I really dig these BX5's. Do you have any experience with them? I'll have to check out some reviews. I mainly wanted the passive set up so I could upgrade later on. Anyway, as for my room, yes, I hate light hahah. So here are some lighted shots of my room—

and as for the detolf, it's mainly filled with the retooled anniversary line of GI JOEs, but there is some other stuff mixed in. I don't have the room to display everything I have, so it's a bunch of stuff— x-files, marvel, resident evil, gorillaz, etc. When I move I'm going to get another detolf or two and also mod them so they have more shelves, I've bought the brackets already, I just need to get the glass cut.

I want to have room to display and grow this stuff too:

70's/80's centric figures. I'd like to put together part of the Nostromo from ALIEN on one of the shelfs in the detolf to display the ReAction Alien figures in. I wanna do a mix of actual vintage kenner stuff and a lot of the new kenner emulation figures they are doing, as well as Mego.
