donlombardo
Hi I just got a used turntable (a 20 year old Thorens TD 318 Mk II) that has an Ortofon OMB 20, with a needle that he told me hasn't been changed since he bought it, so I'm not too keen on playing with that, I don't know how healthy the needle is or what it would do to my records... I don't even really know how to tell. On my old table there is a Shure M75MB Type II cartridge, for which I'm planning to buy a new needle, as well. 1. Does anyone know how to tell if my new player is compatible with my Shure cartridge? 2. I'm planning on buying one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B004GSG72M/ref=sr_1_4_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1425823803&sr=8-4&keywords=shure+n75&condition=new Anyone know how Dreher & Kauf needles are, quality wise? 3. I'm pretty new to needles, as you can probably tell, so in very short, if you compare the Shure needle with the Ortofon one - what's the main differences? Tiebreaker: Also got a NAD Phono Preamp PP-1. Anyone used one of those? Comments? I have a Behringer PP400 as of now, might switch them out. donlombardo
*Cartridge. Original post edited. In Sweden we use the term pickup, which is weird, since it's not even a Swedish word to begin with. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_cartridgeit seems like "pickup cartridge" can be used even in English?
ajxd
Ah, ok. Never heard it said that way! So your Ortofon parts do not mix with your Shure parts, if that's what your wording was implying. The Shure will fit on the Thorens This is the replacement stylus for the Ortofon (though other, lower end styli will fit too) http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-20-Stylus?sc=2&category=63 All these styli are interchangable. http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-10-Stylus?sc=2&category=
donlombardo
The Shure will fit on the Thorens Thank you for this! So your Ortofon parts do not mix with your Shure parts, if that's what your wording was implying. This much I knew, what I was wondering was how they compare in sound quality, how long they last, how much they tear on the record, etc... If there is a reason one is so much more expensive than the other (which I guess there must be). This is the replacement stylus for the Ortofon (though other, lower end styli will fit too) http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-20-Stylus?sc=2&category=63 All these styli are interchangable. http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-10-Stylus?sc=2&category=63 What does "lower end" mean? Can you give me an example of another one that will fit? Which ones are interchangable? I only got one result from that link... I'm grateful for the help you're giving! As I said, I'm pretty new to this, but want to learn.
