Emi89
Hey all! I've just switched everything into mylar protective sleeves and I'm now trying to work out what to do with some picture discs. The sleeves they're in seem to be leaving what look like water marks on the records - brushing over them with a finger on a blank side doesn't seem to shift the marks (Anyone had any luck with any magical record cleaning solutions?) Noting that, I'm not keen on the idea of leaving them in the sleeves they're in currently- any suggestions for alternatives? (The mylar ones I already have are a little thin to be the primary sleeve really.) Also in terms of keeping things intact is it worth keeping the original sleeves (Many have splits where the records inside have broken through the edge anyway) or would you just go for an 'upgrade' and transfer stickers etc over as necessary? As they're pretty generic sleeves aside from stickers I'm inclined to just transfer over but it feels so wrong to be chucking part of the original 'setup' haha
Ugotmayo
If you can spare the money, you could buy thicker outer sleeves and use your thinner sleeves as the inner sleeves for the vinyl, and the jacket separated from the vinyl but in the outer sleeve.. if that makes sense haha. I only keep the the original sleeves if they got somethin special goin' on with it . I personally use these: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Outer-Record-Sleeves-Pack/dp/B00B1W2QAS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1443837913&sr=1-1&keywords=Ultimate+Outer+5.0+Record+Sleeves+%2850+Pack%29, a bit expensive but worth it imo. Keeps both my jackets and vinyl well off from standing on it's own weight, even my double LP's; and it's real nice quality.
Emi89
Thanks mayo That's reassuring to know haha Always torn with what seems like a good idea and what is actually a good idea for the record and preserving it complete and saleable should I ever want/need to sell anything in the future. I still feel I'm relatively new to collecting (certainly new to checking out forums and stuff to help along the way!) so I'm not sure what the best things to do are in the long run- having not had a 'long run' to find out haha I ordered some nagaoka inners that I was planning to use for the records themselves, I suppose in the meanwhile they might at least minimise the issues with the pic discs and die cuts- I just hate those damn pic disc sleeves!!!!! haha Sadly those particular ones aren't available to ship to London but hopefully I can track down something similar Do they stay as clear as they look there over time? I had some thinner poly sleeves that I'm switching out of that were just horribly cloudy and made everything look a bit dingy haha Clarity is part of why I went with mylar (Aside from generally being a safe material for storage) and I had been hoping to track down some 4mil but had to settle for 2mil haha
Blaine
I personally use the following inner sleeves and outer sleeves on everything in my collection. 12" Records Mobile Fidelity Master Sleeves - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/Mobile-Fidelity-Master-Sleeves-50-Pack-p/312nmofi.htm For non-gatefold-2xLP, Diskeeper Double Audiophile Sleeves - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/diskeeper-audiophile-inner-sleeve-pack-of-50-p/312drps.htm Ultimate Outer 5.0 - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/ultimate-outer-5-0-record-sleeve-p/9380.htm 10" Records Diskeeper 2.0 Antistatic Inner Sleeve - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/Diskeeper-2-0-Antistatic-10-Record-Sleeves-p/9215.htm Ultimate Polypro Outer Sleeve - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/ultimate-10in-polypro-outer-record-sleeve-p/9220.htm 7" Records Diskeeper Antistatic Inner Sleeve - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/7-Inch-Anti-Static-45-Inner-Sleeve-100-Pack-p/9239.htm Ultimate Polypro Outer Sleeve - http://www.sleevecityusa.com/ultimate-7in-polypro-outer-record-sleeve-p/9464.htm If you're referring to the thick, PVC plastic sleeves that come on picture discs, please check out this thread on another forum for more insight: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/warning-to-all-record-collectors-outer-bag-inner-sleeve-concerns.387179/ The constant pressure when records are stacked, side-by-side or top-to-bottom, causes the plastic to stick to the record, which you've already experienced. If left alone this will ultimately cause the chemicals in the plastic to break down, resulting in the plastic sticking to your records and often in the grooves. The best way to preserve your records is to clean them upon receipt, and transfer them into new inner and outer sleeves that are designed for archiving. While some of the options I linked above may seem expensive, it comes out to ~$1.00 per record to preserve them for your lifetime. That's a cheap price to pay, in my opinion, for even the cheapest clearance bin find. I hope this helps. Renfrew757
Ugotmayo
Oh nice Blaine, I didn't know they were cheaper on their actual website.About the 5mil clarity, they are crystal clear, but I did notice the vinyl's that I kept standing outward, such as this: http://41.media.tumblr.com/4aba152ff9185f74c42a77fb1b122345/tumblr_np1847OyDG1rk8kgho1_500.jpg (property of Royce of VC), develop a little cloudyness but still stayed very clear, the rest remain very very clear. But all clear sleeves have the potential of getting hazy as they slide past another and scuff each other up over time. I also use diskeeper inner sleeves related to the ones Blaine linked. Sadly, you're goin' to have to get used to cloudy inner sleeves. Blaine
ejc625
Looks like I need to get some of those disckeeper sleeves to house the actual vinyl.
Emi89
Thanks folks. Looks like I have some exploring to do!! I wish there were a store I could go to in person that stocked all the options- it's so frustrating ordering online haha Thanks for the extra link Blaine, I actually saw that topic a while ago and stupidly didn't act on the info! I do find it kinda surprising that they haven't started putting picture discs in some other type of sleeve for release.
Blaine
Thanks folks. Looks like I have some exploring to do!! I do find it kinda surprising that they haven't started putting picture discs in some other type of sleeve for release. You bet, glad I could help. I think picture discs are packaged in PVC sleeves because they are more rigid than a poly or mylar sleeve, and it allows the artwork to be displayed when on a store shelf. Picture discs are typically considered novelty records, too, often bought for collection purposes rather than with the intent to play them.
