kirbs84
Making a trip to Chicago in August with the wife. Where are some good record stores I should check out. Also, what else should we do while we're there?
kirbs84
Cool. Yeah, thanks for the move.

kirbs84
I've actually been to Reckless once before (cool store - it was the only one I found when I was there for a couple hours one day), but I'm sure I'll go again.
scottheisel
If you're looking for punk/hardcore/indie/metal (basically everything this board covers), your trip should start and end with Reckless. There's some other good stores in Chicago, but that's the gold standard.
markalark17
Championship Vinyl. I. Love. Jeff. I'm also somewhat surprised no one else caught this/commented on it.
kirbs84
About it being from High Fidelity? I just assumed there was actually a store named that now.
markalark17
^ Not that I know of. I wish there was though.
vinyljunkie
reckless sucks and is picked over and overrated in my opinion. plus their used lp prices are pretty outrageous. i usually stop in there anyway, just to check it out, but the last couple times ive been there, i have only walked out with 2 records. some other places to check out Metal Haven (its over by one of the reckless records, so you might as well). Mr. Peabodys. (old school hip hop) Record Dugout Deadwax Lauries Planet Of Sound Daves Records Hard Boiled Records Rock Records Evil Clown there are 100 other record stores in the chicago area. so give them a chance too. your chances of scoring some used bin golden find are higher cause most hipsters just hit up reckless and leave EDIT: also, keep in mind that some of these its been years since ive been to some of these. i never can go to ALL the stores there, so depending where i am in the area, is what stores i go to, so its been 5+ years since i have been to a couple of these. they may not even exist, and there are probably new ones that have popped up. just a few names to get started at least. qskapunk
I still miss the Clubhouse. ah yes.....the clubhouse - was quite sad when they turned it into hi-fi records and now the metro box office / merch space
jessenpr
just an fyi... metal haven is no longer within walking distance of reckless... they moved a few miles north.
go
I got a lot of really cool stuff for decent prices at Reckless. There is this store, forgot the name but I think it's somewhere on N Broadway that has a sign in the shop window that says something along the lines of "We don`t carry CDs. Never have, never will." Awesome.
mrc
i love reckless... i wish their mail order was a little better but oh well. I would kill to be able to live close enough to a store like that. I have gotten tons of stuff super cheap. i think i have placed 6-7 orders with them this year.
numanoid
Reckless. It's not picked over, it just has a lot of foot traffic. But it also has the most people selling their collections to them. And they put out new "used" records all day long. So what's there in the morning could be different from the afternoon. As for their prices, it's hit or miss. I've found obscenely obscure records for dirt cheap, while a still in print copy of something is labeled as an original press for too much money. Dave's is also good. Most of the other ones just deal in new shit (which you can usually just mailorder the color instead), or the really common used items that are worth no more than $0.25 but they want $7.
go
Dave's is also good. Ah, i think that's the one i was talking about.
