RCA console stereo right channel not working

Recommended Posts

I have an RCA Canada model SFG 2121 console stereo with a built-in turntable and radio. Unfortunately I can't provide many other specifications as I've continuously searched the internet for model schematics or manuals without any luck. It's an old unit—similar to other 1970's console stereos I've seen in my searches, but I have never found an exact model match. I've owned this player for many years, but I was using it frequently for a little over two years when it stopped working properly altogether.

I noticed that whenever the player is switched to the turntable input, the right channel would emit a low hum. Sometimes the channel would pop. There would also be times where I'd turn the player on and put on a record and no sound would come out of the right channel at all. I would have to tinker with some buttons on the control panel to get both channels to work. It was last October that the right channel went out for good. Tinkering with buttons didn't work this time. At first I assumed it was just the speaker, but then I realized that both channels still work fine on the radio input. The channel also doesn't work through headphones. I still hear the channel emit a hum and pop, but no other sound comes out of it. I also ruled out the problem being in the needle/tonearm. I tried three different needles and none of them made a difference. The issue is not in the tonearm because the problem also occurs when the stereo is switched to the auxiliary input: no sound coming from the right channel. I tried to clean the rotary selector switch with contact cleaner, but that did not fix the problem.

This is where I'm stuck. The problem is not in the speaker, because it occurs through headphones as well, but the problem also isn't in the tonearm, as it also occurs on the auxiliary input. I'm not sure where the problem is originating from, or how I would fix it once I do find the origin. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
