jgel
I have a Thorens TD 145 table and the audio cables (origional ???) are making that dreaded noise when moved. Has anyone here replaced these before?

jgel
Its very simple to swap the RCA cables. Google it for instructions. I did, but I didn't find detailed instructions. But from what I read I need to buy a soldering iron. Also, is it worth it to upgrade the power cord to a new 3 prong cord?
bearchuck
A lot of these older vintage tables, you can't swap the rca cables. I have an AR-XA where changing the cables would definitely require some soldering skills. From what you're saying, sounds like the Thorens is the same way. Actually, I probably wouldn't solder a new cable on to the table, but rather new jacks so that in the future, swapping cables will be easy. You've probably got a ground wire too, right? Don't forget about that. Honestly, I've never done it myself so take what I've said above with a grain of salt. My advice would be to post something on one of the audio message boards like Audiokarma or Vinyl Engine. You're lucky in that Thorens have a HUGE following and there are tons of people out there willing to help. Obviously you could ask about the power chord too. http://www.audiokarma.org http://www.theanalogdept.com/thorens_dept_.htm http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=17 Hell, just typing in "replacing rca cables on thorens" in google I immediately found some interesting threads ... http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=253190 http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=147939 And one other thing - you're sure it's the cables that are the problem? Have you cleaned the input jacks on your preamp / receiver or even on the cable interconnects? Deoxit seems to be the miracle potion for cleaning oxidation. jase
To change the RCA cables, it'd only take someone with intermediate soldering skills about 10 minutes to do. And that is incuding a cigarette break. And about 20 minutes to change it over to plugs. If you aren't up to it yourself, take it to your nearest electrical shop, and they'll do it quick smart. If you wanted the power cable changed also(wise move) it's take slightly longer. About 45 minutes with 2 cigarette breaks
ajxd
A lot of these older vintage tables, you can't swap the rca cables. Not swap like unplug and plug new in, but remove old, solder in new? All turntables it can be done. Very easy, and yes you'll need a soldering iron.

I was just saying that on many vintage models there are no rca jacks on the actual table so you will in fact have to solder new cables on. Those Thorens tables are really nice; if you're not feeling comfortable with the process or you think that you might mess something up, definitely post on those forums. You'll get plenty of friendly advice.
