What do you think about these turntables and receivers?

Recommended Posts

These have popped up around me recently, what do you guys think? Decent price/worth looking into? It looks like they're possibly all from the same person, so that may be beneficial.

Pretty good stuff, but overpriced, in my opinion. Not by a lot, but if you really had the time / inclination to shop around, I'm sure you could find those units for less.

It's kinda nice that the Pioneer has been serviced recently. Of course, I'd ask the guy what service that entailed exactly, but sometimes I feel like getting something that has been worked on is security that's worth paying for.

I've always liked Sansui gear, but I just checked past ebay sales and no one is paying more than $140 for that particular unit. I suppose that you need to factor in shipping costs as well.

ajxd knows about Marantz turntables, so maybe he has something to contribute.

It does seem like the guy probably knows his vintage gear and I bet that the units have been well taken care of. You could always try to talk him down a little bit.

They are all his. For the receivers, he says he aligned tuner, de-oxed or used contact cleaner on all pots, switches, controls, checked/replaced all bulbs, spot checked all solders, tested all stages (AM/FM, phone, AUX, etc.), and all ports have been cleaned and tested that speakers & RCA connections are good.

On the turntables, more or less he said everything was cleaned, lubed, aligned and tested through the receivers that are for sale.

Sounds thorough to me. Anything else that may be important? I'm waiting on a response from him about whether he'll negotiate prices at all. I checked eBay prices as well, his prices do seem a little proud (but you're right about factoring shipping). Looks like nice stuff.

Well, I don't really consider that a full "servicing." I'd feel much better about it if he checked the values on the capacitors, resistors, etc etc. He basically just cleaned the units and made sure they're working property. Don't get me wrong - that's nice, but if I were selling those receivers, I wouldn't jack up the price simply because I used a few squirts of deoxit to clean the pots. That's just me though.

Nice that he aligned the tuners. And don't take what I said above to mean that the units aren't in good condition and won't last a long time. Chances are, they will.

The other nice thing about buying local is you can always test out the gear before you commit to anything. Buying via eBay can be a crap shoot and an all-around hassle.

I never knew they sold used stuff until now, I went there to find a link to the one I bought new. They do carry new record players but they are the standard Ion, Stanton, Newmark junk. I only originally went there after I realized I didn't want to pay to ship this from like Amazon and have it show up all banged up. These things are HEAVY and heavy gets dropped.

My 1200 was 399 BRAND NEW back in 09. I mean they are totally "worth" 550, but I wouldn't pay it for a used one. Unless it came with a higher end cart with low miles on it.

Hell, here are some used 1200's for less right here:

That was just from a 2 minute search. Only checked that place since thats where I bought mine brand new.

IMO, theyre only "worth" what they typically go for on the open market. Why pay $550 when you can buy one for $400? Doesnt make sense to overpay for anything. Theyre great TTs from what I hear and are a great value at $400 but thats just what everyone else says they're worth, thats all...
