will this work until I can afford quality speakers?

Recommended Posts

So I recently upgraded my turntable to a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. It was an incredible upgrade from my $100 Best Buy Sony turntable, but it's also made me realize my other components are in dire need of an upgrade as well. So I turn 30 in a couple months.

I've decided for my birthday I'll most likely be buying myself a Marantz PM5004 due to the recommendations I've heard on this board, as well as the fact that the vintage Harman Kardon integrated that I have is basically on it's death bed. It makes a loud popping nose every time I turn it on, it has a ridiculous hum to it whenever no music is playing, the volume makes loud distortion when trying to turn it up or down, etc. I basically want to go office space on this $35 receiver I bought off Craigslist. The Marantz fits my budget, and I also plan on getting the Pro-Ject Speed Box because I have a lot of 45's and hate switching the belt whenever I want to listen to just one of them. I'll be looking into blue jeans cables eventually as well as possibly a Music Hall cork slipmat or the acrylic platter from Pro-Ject, and then eventually quality speakers.

So that brings me to my actual question. My weakest link after this upgrade will be my speakers. So, I'm NOT asking if this will sound good, because as has been said on this board, that's personal opinion. My actual question is will the receiver properly push sound to the speakers I have? Will I be putting a strain on the receiver at all trying to get sound to these? They're old Sony tower speakers that I got for free from my stepdad who was getting rid of them. I've attached pictures below with the specs as well as a front view with the cloth grill removed. Thanks for all the help!

They will be fine. I use the same exact set up (my speakers are the ss-u450 that are rated 250watts on the back instead of 220. Everything sounds awesome and the pm5004 can push very loud volumes before getting the dial 1/3 to max. I think the difference in our speakers is size of the woofers. Mine are 12", it looks like yours are 8" or possibly 10".

Everything should work great; I don't think you'll have any problems.
