David Loyd
title says it all. I've been offered a vintage Pioneer sx-737 receiver in good working order for $120. Is this too much? If so what do you think would be fair? He's had it on sale for a bit so i think he'll negotiate. i was thinking about offering him $70. Also, I'm looking to upgrade speakers. But getting bigger speakers doesn't necessarily mean instantly more powerful, or better sound. Would I need another power source of some sort to get bigger sound with the Pioneer amp or my current setup? Current setup: Marantz SR5003 receiver Pioneer SP-B22 speakers Cambridge Audio sp155 preamp. Audio Technica LP120 Turntable. Thanks guys in advance. heypeterman
$120 is okay/a little high if it hasn't been serviced. I would test it out thoroughly. Any static/distortion in the controls, offer accordingly. $50-70, maybe less. Actually, do you live near a place that does servicing or are you comfortable doing it? If no to either, I'd probably pass. The receiver is almost 40 years old and if it hasn't been serviced, it will need it soon. I have an SX-636, the 25w version of the 35w SX-737. Don't let the low power ratings fool you. These sound great at reasonable volumes. I'm not using my SX-636 right now but I wasn't overly impressed with the phono stage. The SX-737 may be better but if you get it, you'll have the opportunity to compare with your Cambridge yourself. Not sure what model you have, I assume you mean the 551p or 651p. If you like the phono stage in the Pioneer, you could get some money back for your preamp.
