thebiglebowski
What a bunch of horseshit. There is some visible mark in the tree, and every time it hits the location of the needle it makes a sound like someone hit a few keys of a piano. That's it. littlebistro
If you read the article, it's actually pretty cool. Obviously it's not an actual needle on a piece of wood.
thebiglebowski
I read it. I should have said stylus, not needle. 1s and 0s forming music could be equally puzzling on the surface but the difference is that there is a pattern encoding information in that case. This is closer to randomly entering 1s and 0s into a text document and trying to play it. It would sound horrible, so you find a way to make your equipment translate it into something that sounds ok, not just mush. But if you are heavily manipulating how you are "interpreting," to make the sound you want to hear, what's special about that? There are 10 billion little deviations in the rings of that wood. It's choosing to just make a simple noise each time it rotates around. Not impressed.
Out of Breath Records
Anyone see that 3D printed record? Or the one made of ice?
Guest
Yeah, it really is just using tree rings to trigger samples via camera as opposed to a keyboard or MPC. Cool idea as an art project but not that impressive beyond that imho.
