  3. yeah overly rude comment was unnecessary. as a business, SL is going to stand by their product here until the bitter end (which they should!!). at the same time, I believe it's our job as a community to provide constructive (albeit subjective) criticism for ways in which they could improve going forward. the fact that they're addressing the webstore issues is already a good sign. however, SL immediately went on the defensive about being perceived as a new-jack, cash-grab business and in the end they shouldn't have that chip on their shoulder. I know that I want to see them succeed because they're getting a lot of licenses for things that i'm passionate about. they don't want custom or original artwork that reimagines the associated properties, but I think the request for more creativity is grounded, and something that they should seriously consider instead of a blanket "to each their own" or "agree to disagree". a fair compromise would be to request more creativity with a property's iconography. I get that they're defending their product here, and I don't think we'll see anything like this again.

sidebar: I actually don't think that the mega man art would look too bad on a CD or smaller format.

Batman, we sincerely appreciate your candor. And certainly, like I said before we do take into consideration what folks like yourself and people in this forum offer in regards to suggestions. To reiterate lots of past suggestions have been implemented (and some willl be implemented i.e. the website), however, there are some things that we will stand our ground frimly.

As far as addressing the "new jack perception" while not said in this thread it has indeed been a phrase that has been tossed around rather unjustly on these very forums. Collectively we have all worked in the music industry in a variety of facets not to mention two previous labels that spanned over two decades so I felt the need to squash notions that try to paint us otherwise.

  4. This has nothing to do with "re-imagining iconography," the design looks terrible aesthetically and from a design perspective. I'm not saying this to be rude or combative, but you're working on a product that I care a lot about and it looks like a cheap Korean bookbag. You can do a lot of cool things with pixel-art, but taking something made with a few hundred pixels and blowing it up to take up 90% of the cover is an objectively horrible idea.

If you honestly say you "stand by your work" then I would seriously consider hiring someone with a better eye for graphic design, because "your work" is not good enough.

Good sir we will have to agree to disagree, simple as that.

  5. Kermit is rather wise. Seriously.

While we appreciate everyone's input constructive or otherwise, we standby our work 100%. While this trend of re- imagining iconography is obviously exciting to others it is just something that doesn't appeal to us in the slightest. Despite what many may think, we certainly do indeed take all of the ideas, recommendations that people on these very forums have shared with us into consideration all throughout Spacelab9's tenure. In fact some suggestions have been implemented while other have been discarded but not without consideration. The reality is we will never be able to make everyone happy. With every release some people are going to be thrilled and others are going to be disappointed. It is just the way things go. What matters is that there will be some Mega Man fans who are thrilled about this release, three of which bias aside are all of us here at Spacelab9. We try to be as inclusive as possible in the process to create content that is exciting to fans but at the end of the day there are some who will praise us and others that will curse us for the decisions we do or don't make, it is what it is.

  6. for sure SL, just my opinion.. sorry if that was rude, i honestly didn't mean to come across as harsh. i just feel like there have been several instances where some really cool/unique stuff could've been done w/ the artwork! and based on what i've seen in other threads related to your releases, i'm not alone in this opinion, and you've probably noticed kickback. i get what you're saying, but i think original work can still true to the spirit of the source material, and also provide a better aesthetic in a large format like an LP sleeve. not discounting the work that you or your designer have done at all (definitely miles better than i could do), just some constructive criticism from a fellow nerd.

No worries dude. Like I said to each is their own. Sorry if I came off sounding too robotic or cold in my response, but certainly no rudeness was detected. But like you said we are very much fans of the source material don't see the need to deviate from that. I know that perhaps there is a perception of us just being a new jack, cash grab business, but that isn't so. Of course we are a business but more so we are fans as well and we are thrilled that we get to worked with properties that personally we are excited about and work iconography that is so well established.

  7. spacelab really needs a graphic designer. i get that the items sell well as they are, but man, they'd be way cooler w/ some creativity. there are some talented folks out there that i'm sure would help out.

To each is their own. We absolutely love the work our designer puts into every single release. If people could only see how meticulously he works over every release.

As far as being more creative, once again to each is their own-personally we don't like this trend of "re-imagining" popular iconography associated with films, television, comic & cartoon properties, etc. From our perspective, and I think other fans out there as well see it as messing with something that was already creative and perfected, and had resonated with an audience.

  8. That's great, thanks for going the extra mile for the fans! :)

So does that mean there are 3 releases? The picture disc, the colored vinyl and the standard vinyl in an edition of how many?

Thanks but the reality is that we are fans ourselves. All of the guys here at Spacelab9 grew up when the NES came out and Megaman is an absolute favorite of all of ours so this really exciting for all of us not only professionally but as fans! We hope to do more things like this like polls and such to get fans involved in these releases so you all feel like its yours as well.

There will be a picture disc version (exclusive to Hot Topic), colored vinyl version and a standard black vinyl edition as well. As far as variants all of the info will be released next week.

  12. I guess that makes sense. You are afterall a business and what business wouldn't want to make money/profit? But why not release a picture disc and non pic disc format at the simultaneously?

It is a pretty simple reason, when you license a property for a specific time it doesn't make sense to exhaust all the steam on a project all at once. It makes far more sense to spread it out. In the constantly changing newsfeed of today it is important from a publicity standpoint to find ways to ensure that you are a part of current news as opposed to being out of sight/out of mind.

  13. What about that Who soundtrack from a few months back?

What about that Who soundtrack from a few months back?

We are working something very, very cool for that. I can't say just yet but I think all Doctor Who fans will be very excited when this does come to fruition.

Man you guys must REALLY love picture discs huh? Seems like almost every release is a pic disc. I understand they can loom pretty cool sometimes, but cmon, they can sound so shitty too

It is not so much that "we" love picture discs-personally speaking in regards to my own collection I don't enjoy the format however, there is indeed a demand for them so with that being said we continue to make them. As long as Hot Topic continues to sell through our picture disc releases like hotcakes we shall continue to make the format available.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MAY 14th, 2015

“THE WOLVERINE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK” MAKES ITS VINYL DEBUT

May 14, 2015 – SNIKT! Appearing on vinyl for the first time, THE WOLVERINE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Double Picture Disc LP will be available exclusively at Hot Topic beginning Tuesday, May 26th. THE WOLVERINE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Double Picture Disc LP includes the original 22 tracks from the soundtrack album by renowned composer Marco Beltrami (Hellboy, Terminator 3) plus the bonus track “Yukiko” which had been previously released as a digital-only track. Marco Beltrami’s moody score is an apt fit for the brooding nature of the character of Logan, better known as “Wolverine. The music created by Beltrami reflects the various states of mind of the mutant Wolverine, adding a level tension that captures the visceral energy of THE WOLVERINE.

Jumping out of the pages of Marvel comic books onto the silver screen, Wolverine has become a fan favorite in both mediums. As a leading character in the both the comic book series for over 30 years as well as in the wildly popular X-Men movie franchise, Wolverine has captivated audiences like no other X-Man before or since, spawning several solo mini-series over the years as well as his own spinoff series of films. THE WOLVERINE sees the enigmatic character in his second solo cinematic adventure, again portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actor Hugh Jackman.

With several more superhero-related soundtrack releases on the horizon, SPACELAB9 kicks off their Heroes on Vinyl series with the release of THE WOLVERINE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Double Picture Disc LP. The Double Picture Disc LP will be available exclusively from Hot Topic stores and through their web store starting May 26, while supplies last - so don’t hesitate, “bub”.
