  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlC5CvDbS4A I'm not a shoegaze expert by any means, but I'll try to do my best. Whether the "Shoegaze" label is official or not, it's used to describe a subgenre of alternative rock. It's characterized by bands that often have distorted sounding guitars with quiet or hush-like vocals. Most of the time, people just use the term to describe bands that sound like, or are influenced by My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, etc. From what I've heard, the term originated from some band that had this similar sound, but the singer didn't know the lyrics to the songs, so he taped the lyrics to the floor and sang while staring at the floor. Hence the term "Shoegaze." I agree that the extensive amount of subgenre labels out there could get pretty annoying, but when people refer to "shoegaze," I have a good idea of what kind of bands they're talking about. A lot of what I said could be total BS, so if anyone wants, feel free to correct me. It's just what I have gathered up within the past few months.
  2. I now own all three Slowdive albums on vinyl. Just for a Day, Souvlaki, and Pygmalion. I've been looking around, and there seem to be some EPs and compilations on vinyl that are available out there. Does anyone know if anything else from Slowdive, outside of the three albums, that are worth owning on vinyl? Official or unofficial, it doesn't matter to me. Currently on the fence about the "Hide Yer Eyes" compilation, but I don't know if it's worth picking up.
  3. Been lurking this thread. Thanks for all the replies. As tomfiend had mentioned, I'll probably just order most of these albums on Amazon. Thanks for the heads up about the Misfits' "Walk Among Us." I'll avoid the Rhino versions.
  4. Happy to hear about the split. I hope it's released on a 12" record though, even if it's just four songs or so. I hated how the Whirr/Anne split was released on two 7" records.
  5. Definitely. I also run into that problem too. It seems that anytime I want a few albums, they're always seperated in different distros/stores, and I have no choice but to pay a shipping price for each. I have terribly bad luck when it comes to this, haha.
  6. I'm always scrambling around to find the most inexpensive copy of a record that I want. Sometimes, I buy a record, thinking that it's the cheapest price out there, only to find that it's cheaper somewhere else. This frustrates me to no end. Hope this isn't a stupid thread, but if anyone has seen a cheaper copy of these records, then let me know. The prices next to the albums are the lowest price I could find. They're already pretty low, but I just wanted to try my luck. The Misfits - Walk Among Us ($15) The Misfits - Static Age ($12) The XX - XX ($14) The XX - Coexist ($14) Poison Idea - Kings Of Punk ($15) Dead Boys - Young Loud and Snotty ($15) Don't know how this thread will go, but if it anyone else wants to request some records, then feel free to join in. Off topic - For those familiar with The XX, which of their albums is the better one?
  7. I'm not an expert, but I'll try to help. I agree with Yanquiuxo, I think that your priority should be to upgrade your speakers right now. In my opinion, it's Turntable>Speakers>Receiver. Since you have a pretty decent turntable, then you should be worrying about upgrading your speakers. I'm a cheap bastard, so I only know about budget speakers. A lot of budget speakers can sound great, in my opnion. From what I've heard, these Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers are really good: Bookshelf Speakers ($127): http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG or Floorstanding Speakers ($127 EACH): http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG I've seen the prices for those speakers lower a few times on amazon, you just need to check daily. I think I've seen the Pioneer Floorstanding Speakers go for $87 each before. If you want to go cheaper, then I would recommend going on Craigslist and looking for used speakers. But remember to approach Craigslist with caution, and always test out something before you buy it. Just use common sense, and you'll be fine. Here's a thread that you might want to check out. This for Floor Standing speakers, though. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?p=7697181 I'm partial to the Boston Acoustics series, since I own a pair of A70s. Boston Acoustics A40, A70, A100, A150 are all great. Here's another link that might help guide you on what to look for. Just read the first post. http://www.theb9.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=925591#.U94Ks6OTG8A Hopefully I was able to help some. Like I said, I'm not an expert, and I'm not trying to mislead you, but this is just knowledge based off of research that I did a few months ago when I was looking for some speakers on a budget. So, if anyone sees anything wrong, then feel free to correct me.
  8. Sent you a pm. Thanks for the offer!
  9. Haha, thanks for the sentiment, buddy.
  10. I'm an idiot. I made this thread a few days ago, and I thought it was deleted, but it was only moved to another section of the board. Sorry for posting in the wrong place. Anyways, thanks for all the replies, going through all of it, and very much enjoying it.
  11. I'm looking for some sad (or sad sounding) albums to listen to. Can anyone recommend any? I'm familiar with: - Red House Painters (and related bands) - Jason Molina - Townes Van Zandt - Slowdive - Annabelle's Garden - American Football - Carissa's Wierd Any genre or sadness level (even if it's subtlety sad) is welcome.
  12. Nice pick up, jhulud. I usually don't like shirts with quotes in big fonts, but that one looks really awesome.
  13. Step 1: Start a fire Step 2: Throw the records into the fire Step 3: Reassess your life decisions
  14. Any Townes Van Zandt fans here? I've been meaning to listen to him, and finally have some free time. I'll be buying one or two of his albums based on what kind of answers I get on here. What is his best album? Which of his albums are must buys?
  15. I will be purchasing the Eternal 10" record from the graveface webshop. I'm not very familiar with the label's releases, can anyone recommend anything else that I should pick up? Also, those that are familiar with the Eternal record, what do you think of it? A friend of mine suggested that I should pick it up, and so I did. Thanks in advance.
  16. I figured so. Oh well, thanks though, cephcarn4 and jhulud. Just wondering, to those who have listened to "Suns and Lovers," how does it compare to "Downard Years to Come" and "Guilty of Everything"?
  17. Really late on this, but does anyone know if I can still pick up their Suns and Lovers EP anywhere?
  18. The singer's voice is a bit whiny/nasally, haha. Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a jerk, but I think that's possibly the biggest reason for why, along with the cheesy lyrics and the frequent dialogues. BUT, I will say that I listened to the album a couple of more times today, and I'm warming up to it. Just a bit though. Glad to see that a lot of people are digging the album. I just have a weird taste in music.
  19. A bit disappointed with Bilinda Butchers' "Heaven." Maybe I expected too much based off of "Edo Method" and "Lover's Suicide." I'll give the album a couple more listens.
  20. Thanks. I've been lagging behind with this release, I'll be picking this up for sure.
  21. Really digging the new song. Pre-ordered after a few listens. I'm not in the Record Club, but those who are in it are getting some awesome shit. Very jealous.
  22. Insound has a 10% off discount code for vinyl purchases. Code: welovevinylmore http://www.insound.com/
  23. Very cool. I did not know about that, I'll be sure to check out what they have.
