  3. Ron Paul came in a close second to Michelle Bachmann. Rick Perry, a write-in candidate, came in 6th. I don't think Barack Obama should be reelected, but I also don't see a suitable alternative. Michelle Bachmann winning the Ames Straw Poll means little to me. We'll see how she does in the caucus. barack obama needs to make it absolutely clear to the public that it's the republican congress that has messed up an effective political process. once he does that, he'll win. fox news really botched the republican debate and made every person on that stage seem unqualified. i think that the problem with american politics these days is that 85% of us are just fed up with everything (me included). i would venture to say that at least 60% of those people would vote for barack obama if he can prove to them the problem is the intransigence of a republican congress. it's the 15% on the fringes who control the message because they've got money to spend and time to rally. basically, the barackster needs to grow a pair and call out congress. he needs to move further left and then compromise towards the middle -- not start at the center just to concede to the right.

  9. i've often thought this myself. it seems that depending on the rank achieved, politicians who were in the military are better leaders, and possess a certain grace under fire. with how connected our military successes are to the economy of literally the entire world, it's important to know the inner workings of the military. is it necessary? definitely not. is it helpful? it can be. colin powell would have been a great president. pro choice, supported the repealing of don't ask don't tell (even though he was largely responsible for it), rational opinions on gun controls, a belief that in order to wage war these days, you must have an international coalition. this democrats favorite republican.

  11. he's not very bright either. afghanistanis? he was at the forefront of the invective against "iranian mulsim fascists" but didn't know that the CIA orchestrated the coup in 1953?

  13. i understand what the moderator was trying to get her to say. you have to remember who sponsored this debate as well - iowa republican party, fox news and the examiner. the panel was conservative. the questions were leading. if the moderators were split between liberals and conservatives, you can bet on the gay curing operation question to be asked. but it wouldn't be a conservative asking it.

  15. she got called out on the submissive to her husband thing (which she handled with great poise, i thought), and the crowd booed. i imagine after that and newt's reaming out of the moderators fox decided to quit it with the personal questions and focus more on the issues. i don't think huntsman has the heart to be a politician. he's too nice and can't step up the rhetoric like he'll have to. obama will wipe the floor with him if it comes to that. i think it'll be between perry and romney. romney doesn't need iowa at all, he's popular elsewhere. perry, if he wins the republican primary, will be a formidable opponent to obama. he could sweep the south and all of the western mountain states. he will win at least ohio, texas and florida. tpaw and mbach need to get a room. ron paul is decent, except when he talks about the economy. he looked pretty frail. santorum is just a fucking baby. he's done too. cain isn't ready for public office.

  17. i think the only one who can win the general is mitt romney. none of the others stand a chance against the barackster. last night, the republican party lost. it was pretty pathetic.
