  1. I like the Hold Steady suggestion a lot.

    Thanks guys.

I also want to find a good Springsteen song for this.

And yes this is for students in China. That means that anything too lit major-y will go over their heads. I'm trying to go simple and memorable. The good side of this is they are generally really interested and eager when it comes to foreign stuff. It will be something new and cool to them, because they are not like asshole teenagers in the west who think everything is "gay" or "retarded."

  2. I am teaching a high school English class, grade 11. Because I'm not an English major or a lit snob, I'm not really interested in dwelling on old poems out of a textbook. I'd rather have some fun with poetry and use some good music to teach it. I'm sure the kids would enjoy that a lot more too.

If you ever listened to a song and looked at some lyrics, and thought "man, my English teacher should have showed us this song to teach us X (metaphor, personification, simile, paradox, oxymoron, hyperbole, meter, symbolism, alliteration, assonance, consonance, and so on...) then let me know about it. I'm slowly combing through all my music looking for ideas, but if anything comes to mind please share.

Regular school common sense applies. I can't use anything with foul language.

So far I am using a bit of Paul Westerberg, Motion City Soundtrack, Death Cab For Cutie, Weakerthans, Loved Ones, and so on.

  3. This lady hauls out a huge rat trap with the biggest fucking rat I have ever seen stuck to it. Looked more like a small dog. It's squirming and squealing and she runs back inside and comes back out with a long bamboo pole. Then she proceeds to crush its skull with it.

I also rode down a river on a bamboo raft steered by one of those stereotypical Chinese farmers with a pointy straw hat. There were camels in the river and one was staring me down.

    Just thought I'd share.

  4. I used bank of china to withdraw some cash from my bank in Canada. Is there some reason why I shouldn't do that? If there is, I'm not clear on it. Haven't seen Merchants Bank around here.

The other foreigners here have said that finding alternate ways to access facebook and other blocked sites can be pretty risky. I'll have to know more about what I'm getting into.

Hoping to visit Shanghai for a long weekend or whenever I have a handful of days off. I'm a few hours away in Wenzhou.

  5. Filesharing sites seem to be ok, but I always found them via blogspots that would link to them. I can't get to any blogs so I'm having a hard time finding files.

I'll be here until the end of June...

Relatives back home should be sending me Alternative Press every month so I should at least be able to keep on top of what's coming out and what to try download.

Of course, I'll still be ordering vinyl while I'm away and coming home to a big stack of records next summer.

  6. So I've been in China about 10 days now and just got internet in my apartment. The bad news is, so many websites are blocked here. No facebook, no blogspot, no Onion. Blogs on blogspot were typically where I found new albums to check out, so I'm really hurting for new music these days. Oh well, it's a new school year starting and it's a crazy time to be teaching. Too busy to sit at the computer unless I'm preparing classes. I hope this board can help keep me up to date with new music and not go get this site blocked in China too...
