  1. I've only been collecting for about 4 or 5 months. I'm wondering if how we do it now is similar to how it was done 5-10 years ago.

Comment on these current observations of mine specifically:

    - It seems to be a primarily "virtual" market.

    - Most records have pre-orders.

    - If it's a repress of a really popular album, it may never even hit stores (and sometimes not even be available outside of a pre-order).

    - Usually, if an indie label release is popular enough, it gets "re-pressed," not continually pressed.

    - Color/jacket variants are the hottest topic in conversations about vinyl.

    - There seem to be a large amount of collectors/buyers.

    - Will it be impossible to find TA - Parting, Copeland - In Motion, The Starting Line EPs, etc. in 5 years?

Also, anything else you can think of that would be surprising or that I just wouldn't have thought of. Keep in mind, though I'm very immersed in collecting at this point, it has only been a few months. If there was something that was different just 1 or 2 years ago, I won't even know that.

Enlighten me, I've always been curious.

  2. i think expensive packaging happens too often. there are a few releases that deserve/call for it (blink-182 s/t, touche amore - parting, brand new - devil and god, etc.), but other than that, i wish labels would keep things simple and affordable.

if you think about it, if every record was like that daytrader ep you're talkign about above (which i own), we'd all have a lot more records.

that being said, i collect as much for the packaging as the next guy. just a thought.

this post is pretty darn contradictory, sir.

yeah, i realize. it's just something i've thought about before and on which i've teetered back and forth. basically, whenever i'm ordering records, i wish they were just basic packaging so i could get more. i'm always thinking about what i can't afford. then when i actually flip through all of them and pull out that beautiful 180g with exclusive artwork and an uncoated matte finish on heavyweight cardboard, i'm perfectly fine with the way it is.

  4. I've had no issue with this release. I am still convinced that the issue with TWY split is that it was one translucent color and on opaque. The difference in density is what I think caused the warping. I'm still annoyed about that as well.

copeland - in motion has one trans and one solid. i have a copy. it sounds fine. i don't think this is the problem by nature. it could have been the issue in this case, but it shouldn't be somethign that couldn't ahve been avoided.

  5. Do you guys ever buy 2 copies of each release to play one and keep one unplayed?

I buy variants of my favorite records because it's fun to play them. They're like flavors to me. They each give the record a slight different feel and mood.

never thought of that. i'll have to try it sometime.

I think its funny that people care if other people collect variants of a certain band or album. Seriously, who gives a fuck? If you dont collect variants then good for you. If you do then good for you too. I think if someone is actually BUYING physical music then its a good thing.

Ive got a bunch of variants of certain bands/albums that I really like but Im running out of space and thinking about selling off most of them just to clear out some room on my shelves.

valid point, but that's not really what the thread's about. we're trying to stay away from talking about pros/cons of variant collecting and just talk about "parting" from a collection. whether you have/would and how hard it was/could be. just an fyi!

  6. I could only get into two songs from this; El Paso and The Best Places To Be A Mon.

You guys need to get a copy of the bonus disc for the new album though; those songs blow the whole rest of the album out of the water, which is kind of funny considering they didn't make the cut.

    to earn street cred:

    1. rank the band's albums with their earliest/rawest on top all the way "down" to their most recent/most polished

    2. tell everyone their unreleased songs/demos are a notch above whatever was actually released

    3. make a ke$ha and/or creed joke

  7. for the sake of you actually having a solid point, i really wish you had used a different band in your example. went too far into "shock value" and no one's gonna consider your point.

I was shocked too the first time I saw "For Sale: JEW ...".

haha. can't argue with that. though i've seen enough south park in my day to be numb to antisemitism... :)

and oh yeah... alien ant farm... and stuff

  8. I don't usually. Like I said, I'm not crazy about sound quality--this one just really stood out on the poor end. I'll see how much my DiscWasher helps. Considering I don't ever clean them when I get them, it's still consistent, ya know?

EDIT: Were you asking about the "thrift store record" I was using in the analogy?

I just DiscWasher'd that sucker (TDS - War Paint) like a pro and it still pops through all of the first track and through all the "lulls" on the rest of the A-side. Major disappointment.
