  1. btw, the call center is the largest gathering of celebrities pretending to give a fuck about a Samsung smart phone. someone call Guinness.
  2. Oh god... Jon Stewart. let me know when he's gone, I'll tune back in.
  3. Just tuned in to see Bon Jovi. fuck my life. (btw, we're in the process of getting the block quotes fixed. so hopefully that will be done by this weekend)
  4. Poor Jack White. Last week was rather tough on him. First, the Detroit-born rocker made an offhanded comment about the nature of "authenticity" in an interview with Esquire UK. His train of thought being that "the goal of modern celebrity is to make yourself into the lowest common denominator." Adding, "'Hey, I'm a guy just like you. I like a beer, a football game.' Especially in reality television, you'll see people will go so far as to make a fool out of themselves just to prove that." He tend set his sights on Lady Gaga, who he accused of trying too hard. "I don't think she lives it because it's all artifice," he said. "It's all image with no meaning behind it. You can't sink your teeth into it. It's a sound bite. It's very of this age, because that's what people want. They want a Twitter line, a jpeg, an MP3." Ouch, and this is coming from a guy who pretended his wife was his sister. Fans took his lament as an attack on Gaga's music. White, conversely, took to his website to blame Esquire for yellow journalism. "I'd like to address the recent tabloidesque drama baiting by the press in regards to Lady Gaga," he wrote. "I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way. I was in a conversation about the drawbacks of image for the sake of image, and that it is popular nowadays to not question an image in front of you, but only to label it as "cool" or "weird" quickly and dispose of it." Frankly, I've been torn about the "authenticity" of Jack White. While I won't deny his talents, that man sure does go out of his way to act different. For example, check out the wonderful 2008 documentary It Might Get Loud. White's segments involve him driving around and playing guitar with himself at the age of 8. Considering neither The Edge or Jimmy Page, who co-started in the film, resorted to any addition "imagery," its a bit... weird. Saying nothing of his love of taxidermy. But weird isn't a disease, it's a choice. Who is he to argue the validity of Gaga's eccentricities over his own? After all, is there really any difference between dressing up as an undertaker versus putting on a dress composed of meat. Both are cries for attention, no? But I digress. Finally, White's not-so-great week concluded with a semi-revealing interview on NME.com, where he discussed his difficult marriage with former The White Stripes drummer, Meg White. "In The White Stripes, it was impossible to share the good moments with Meg because she was very uninterested," he told the website. "If something nice happened, it wasn't like we would hug or have a drink. That wasn't what went on." White went on to say that there were plenty of 'treasurable moments' between the two. "It's strange to know that there's beautiful moments that no one will ever know about," he said. "It's whether I'm going to tell you, because Meg's never going to tell you. There's a sadness to that, a romance." Yikes. My advice to Mr. White: bottle up some of that honesty. The world wouldn't know what to do with it anyways. 5. Earlier this year Trent Reznor announced a partnership with Dr. Dre's overrated Beats enterprise. Rather than slapping his signature on another pair of shitty-headphones, Reznor has revealed to the The New Yorker that the partnership includes launching a streaming music service next year. "It's probably not what you're expecting!", he told the magazine. Tentatively dubbed "Daisy," the service skews more towards a Pandora-like experience, utilizing mathematics to determine suggestions for a listener. However, unlike the former, suggestions from music "connoisseurs" will also weight into the equation, creating a platform "in which the machine and the human would collide more intimately." As Reznor puts it, Daisy will offer a layer of "intelligent curation" not found in competing services. As if you walked into a record store and were greeted by an employee who knows "what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't necessarily have encountered." This all sounds great... if it works. Pardon my cynicism, however, past experiences with Beats-products make me slightly wary of this venture. Likewise, both Reznor and Dr. Dre will be entering a rather crowded space. Does "intelligent curation" offer enough incentive to switch from the likes of Spotify or rDio? Will the service even be competitive, especially when considering that Beat's products generally (and needlessly) cost twice as much as its nearest competition? I guess we'll know more next year. Stay tuned. Source: The New Yorker via Pitchfork Trent Reznor to launch a streaming music service... with Beats by Dre?

  7. Thanks everyone. Results are being tallied. Also, it should be mentioned, I'm not responsible for the reissues. The editorial side I'm building won't be connected to record production in any way. More on this next year tho.
  8. Speaking of Trent Reznor, he has a new project with his wife, Mariqueen Maandig, and longtime calobrators Rob Sheridan and Atticus Ross, called How to Destroy Angels. The video for "Ice Age" was directed by John Hillcoat, who recently directed Lawless. What awaits you is seven minutes of ominous pop-art sans any Jesse Eisenberg dialogue. Enjoy. Watch This! 9. Queens of the Stone Age's upcoming sixth studio album just got a duo of interesting guest appearances. In addition to Dave Gorhl, who will return as the band's drummer for an undisclosed period of time, Oscar-winning composer Trent Reznor will also lending his particular brand of angst and electric synths to the unnamed album. As will former Queen's bassist Nick Oliveri. Yes, the same Nick Olivieri who a few months ago signed a plea bargin to avoid jail time for a domestic dispute gone amuck. The same Nick Olivieri who was kicked out of Queens in 2004 when frontman Josh Homme became aware of Oliveri's violent tendencies towards his girlfriend. Reznor's participation was revealed during a Q&A on Reddit earlier this month, while Oliveri's participation has only been confirmed via the Facebook of his side-project, Mondo Generator. The reunion shouldn't come as a total surprise. Last year Homme reveleaed to Q Magazine that he and Oliveri were on great terms, adding, "I just forgot to tell all the rest of you people [the public] because you’re on my Christmas list but I misplaced my bottle of Got-to-give-a-shit-what-everyone-else-thinks-about-stuff, you know?" All that missing from Queen's latest record is an appearance by Jack White. That said, there is still plenty of time before the record's rumored summer release. 14. Hey kids, For the blog side of VC, I want to do something cool, mainly create a top albums of the year list as chosen by you. Here's how it will be done, for the next week post your submissions for your top 5 favorite represses of this year into this thread. Any genre is permitted. I'll comb through this thread next Tuesday, pick out the titles that repeat the most, and create a poll to decide on the final choices. Additionally, I'll be asking you guys to contribute blurbs on why these represses are the best this year. More on this later. Only one rule - the records MUST have been released this year.
  15. Okay, Ive now been told I should do represses as well. SHould I do this in a separate thread? or can you guys just edit your posts and include those as well.
