Friend of mine was wanting to go to this. She was shocked how quick they sold out. I had no idea they were $100+ now.
Them Crooked Vultures... Flaming Lips... Brand New/Thrice... None of them sold this venue out as fast. Only show that went quicker was Foo Fighters for the DNC back in August. (Those were gone in 30 sec... I know cuz I tried and failed...) -
I just wish I had everything I bought on CD in the '90s on vinyl. I could probably pay off my mortgage. That Cardigans record going for over $300 on eBay last month? CRAZY.......
An old music-store friend and I were commiserating on seeing stacks of Dave Matthews records going for $10 cuz they couldn't GIVE them away back in '98 or so. That's a $250+ record now.... -

My Whiskeytown collection... It doesn't look all that impressive in terms of size, but this is everything the band has ever released on vinyl. And I can't say that about (hardly) any other artist in my collection.
Collector's note: The full-length LPs on the bottom might go for $20 combined. The four 7-inches across the top? $200 easy. Go figure. -
To the contrary, I love Brand New! Admittedly, my gf loves them more and between the two of us, we have a pretty nice BN collection.
However, the thought of paying $100 for a single LP makes my heart sad. If I can't get a record for retail, I set my limits and wait it out. Patience is a virtue and I am almost always able to find the ones I want without selling a kidney.
I fully understand obsession, but some of these pop punk vinyl fanatics blow my mind with the prices they'll pay for some stuff.
That's all. Now I feel obligated to post a collection. Soon.
I was of the same mindset, but then one of my friends who runs a local shop listed "Mars Volta" in his "Latest Used Records" FB post. It was "De Loused." And it was $100. And yeah, I drove down there and bought it.
Then the coda.... I loved having the record, but I was almost *afraid* to play it because it cost so much. Plus the front cover was kinda beat to s**t. So when someone offered me $150 outright for it I grudgingly sold.
Moral of the story: $100+ is a lot for ANY piece of vinyl, but some records are just a good investment, like a stock portfolio you can actually play on your turntable.....
Posting my WT collection soon.

Oooh... Now I want that Evil Empire. DAMMIT.
Our store here in CLT still has an original of "People Of The Sun" with the original price sticker from 2000-something. $14.99. If anyone needs it PM me.

Kudos to Sub Pop for acknowledging that some of us have to work on Mondays. Ordered a couple copies once I got home. And sorry, I dig the "new" song, but I basically dig everything PS has ever done.
And yet I HATE Owl City with a fuckin' PASSION....... -
Tons of rare and semi-rare records I'm hunting.... TDAG is the *only* one that ever reaches this level of ridiculousness.
On a weekly basis, apparently.

Nice to see a list with some good jazz on it.
-
Yep, the first pressing of Into The Wild (with the bonus 7") goes for crazy amounts of money, but the repress has been easily available for a spell. Retail is about $50 so getting it for $30 and change is a nice deal.
-
Picked it up at my local store today. $14 + tax beats $14 + $7 shipping! (Although I didn't get the limited 7"...)
-
I was gonna buy this at Insound with a coupon but they're backordered. That's what I get for waiting.
There's still a listing at Amazon for $26, but before I pull the trigger, wanted to check the board to see if anyone had a copy they felt like getting rid of....
-
Starting to go out-of-print already. (!!!) I'd grab copies now if you want one....
-
Exactly, not the original 1996 pressing.
I've never been overly smitten with "first pressings," assuming the reissue is done well. And sometimes it's a smart idea to switch. I covered the cost of all four of my current Wilco LPs by selling ONE copy of "Summerteeth" before it got repressed, for instance. -
Oh yeah? Got a near-mint used of Mellon Collie today for $35.

Speaking of... Is it odd the Gotye vinyl is already OOP? I would've bought a sealed one had I known...

Interesting promo vinyl just fell into my hands and, after some online searching that turned up nothing, I'm assuming one of three things:
a) This is very rare
No one is selling
c) No one cares
Anyway. Check it out if you're interested, I set a low bid price as I truly have no idea of the value:

Looks like I was 16 months too late.....

If anyone is looking for the spraypaint cover, I just put mine up on eBay. It's in perfect condition, but I need that present-buying money for the holidays....
-
Fair enough... I picked up Sun Kil Moon's "Ghosts Of The Great Highway" years ago, when it was already OOP (but not the crazy price it is now) for $10.
Call me old school, but I think there's just as much value in picking up something BEFORE it goes OOP and prices go sky-high... as there is in stumbling across something rare that's been under-priced...

I was a HUGE Whiskeytown fan long before most folks knew who Ryan Adams was. I bought every single one of their 7"s at their original prices ($2-4) when they first came out... This would be "Angels EP" (on MoodFood), "Theme For A Trucker" double (Bloodshot), and "Car Songs" split with Neko Case (Bloodshot again).
SO... Total investment=$8.... Current market value (I think)=$400+

How much is "small fortune"? As I picked this up when M Good first offered it for sale on his website... Near as I can remember it was a limited pressing and sold for around $30 with shipping. I wasn't a huge vinyl collector then, but I LOVE Avalanche as a complete album... and even then, I suspected this would wind up being a collector's item.
ANYWAY. Not to brag... If I badly needed the $ I would certainly sell to you... But it's not really something I want to part with at the moment! FYI you've got great taste in rare stuff... I couldn't get my hands on PJ20 but I do have the FIRST pressing of Jar Of Flies/Sap (with the AIC logo etched into Side 4) and the vinyl of Kozelek's greatest album IMHO... Ghosts Of The Great Highway... which I believe is going for a pretty penny as well....

I had an issue with SRC where the tracking # was wrong, the package didn't show, and then no one responded to emails or the 1-800 number.
BUT.... I contacted the "SRC" on this board (Jenna?) and she tracked down the source of the problem, my package went out FedEx and arrived in 3 days, AND everything in perfect condition. So no complaints now.
Kudos to SRC for taking a potentially bad situation and turning around in a very positive way. I'm gonna definitely keep ordering from them, especially if they keep repressing vintage 90's records....
