MMH 2.2 / Pro-Ject Speed Box power supply issues

Recommended Posts

Alright, I'm turning to you sarcastic bastards for help. May God have mercy on my soul.

I have a Music Hall 2.2 running through a Pro-Ject Speed Box.

I'm in the middle of a move, and during the move, I seem to have lost the power supply (wall wart) for the Speed Box.

Apparently, in the time since I've had the Speed Box, I've lost the original wall wart for the turntable.

I ordered a generic replacement 16v wall wart thinking I'd be back in business.

Upon plugging it in, it powered the Speed Box, but the platter won't spin on the turntable.

If I plug the power supply into the turntable and bypass the Speed Box, it still won't spin.

Before you ask:

1) There is power in all situations

2) The belt is on the turntable

Any ideas? I'm super irritated because I have a ton of stuff to spin!

The AC adapter for the old Debut Carbon doesn't work for the Speed Box. The AC adapter for the Speed Box outputs DC. The Debut Carbon AC adapter outputs AC.

Specs for the Speed Box here: http://project-audio.com/main.php?tech=speedboxs&cat=default〈=en

EDIT: the Music Hall 2.2 must be an AC motor otherwise it wouldn't have worked with the Speed Box so the same as the old Debut Carbon.

Yeah, the 2.2 is an AC motor.

It's an earlier Speed Box. I'll try to find the specs for it.

Do you happen to know if the Speed Box ships with its own cord or if it uses the TT cord?

I can't remember, but if that's the case, I should be set if I just order a replacement TT cord.

EDIT: It looks like the Speed Box ii did come with its own power supply: http://www.project-audio.com/inhalt/en/manual/manual_speedbox.pdf

The Speed Box ships with its own AC adapter and a cord to connect it to the turntable. You need the Speed Box AC adapter. It takes the AC from the mains supply, sends DC to the Speed Box. The Speed Box then sends a lower voltage AC to the turntable.

Thanks. I guess I'll look into why a generic 16v supply wouldn't work and see what else is out there.
