ajxd
Just to be different then Sota Moonbeam $800 Musical Fidelity V90LPS $229 Cambridge Audio Azur 351A $379 Kef Q100B $299 (Amazon) A little over budget but where's the fun in staying in budget and for a bit more I'd go for a bigger Cambridge amplifier A little over and no cart. kannibal
Okay, so I went a completely different direction: Turntable: Marantz TT15 $999 http://www.musicdirect.com/p-95527-marantz-tt-15-acrylic-turntable-factory-reconditioned.aspx Amp:Yamaha A-S500 $350 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2GA0V86649 Speakers: Polk New Monitor 45B $149 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290269 So, obviously, i didn't include any extra money for cables or accessories, or even tax and/or shipping. My approach was get a anchor. in this case, it's the TT. A GREAT deal with a cart included. The speakers and amp are fine to get you by for a while while you save up and figure out what kind of sound you like. When you are ready, you upgrade those parts, one at a time, and experience the charge and growth of you system. Really the amp and speakers are less important IN THIS CASE because the goal is to upgrade them. Really anything of decent entry-level quality would do. Keep in mind the used speaker market is VERY soft, so great deals can be found. I really wanted to include some Morrow Cables, as I think they are awesome, and a difference maker. If i found an item that would have allowed my to free up $99 for the phono cable, I would include them.
kannibal
Just to be different then Sota Moonbeam $800 Musical Fidelity V90LPS $229 Cambridge Audio Azur 351A $379 Kef Q100B $299 (Amazon) A little over budget but where's the fun in staying in budget and for a bit more I'd go for a bigger Cambridge amplifier I think we may have had the same idea. I think the Azur comes with a built-in phono pre, so slap a $100 starter cart on that Sota and go!
allenh
A little over and no cart. I know but an AT95 would fix that and sound pretty nice in that Combo I don't hear enough love for Sota products in the US, especially considering they are home grown and have been making superb turntables for a very long time, the Sapphire is a design masterpiece. I think we may have had the same idea. I think the Azur comes with a built-in phono pre, so slap a $100 starter cart on that Sota and go! You could be right on the built in phono although it's historically been an option with the Cambridge amps if it's been offered at all. That said the MF V90 will be better than anything Cambridge in that department but expensive in the US. If the phono is built in then that means there's $200ish to spend on a cartridge It was a quick look around and given a bit of time I'm sure I could trim the price to within budget and include an AT95. I was surprised at the price on the Kef's though they are a bargain if anyone is looking for speakers of that size. Edit I did consider the RP1 but I would have to replace the platter with an acrylic one immediately as the stock platter is rubbish and stand by a used RP3/Planer 3 being a better option than a new RP1 if spending real money. overall I went with the similar logic to kannibal although with my choice it was just the amp that would need to be upgraded but it is still good enough to keep company with the front end and speakers
NewOldStock
No phono pre stage on the 351A.
kannibal
http://www.needledoctor.com/Cambridge-Audio-Topaz-AM10-Integrated-Amplifier?sc=2&category=271 The Topaz has the phono pre at the $350 price point. And I agree about the V90 being better, but you are over budget.
