need to transport 30+ records via airplane...

I would bring a second carry on bag, like a totebag, that you can fit a bunch of records in. My dad actually flew out to visit me recently and did just this, carried on about 30 records from my old room in a tote bag. You may have to pay extra for a 2nd carry-on, but unless you can pack them really well in a checked bag, I would do that. I'm on the road currently and brought about 15 records to give to my friend, but I packed them in record mailers (as if I was shipping them) and then put them in my luggage, and that worked fine.

You could always invest in a DJ case to carry your records on planes with. I did this since I frequently by records when I travel.
