troymess
I should probably chime in here since I have over 4 TB of external harddrives working with my Mac, but anything I would have said has primarily been touched upon above. Good luck!

cosmonaut
Just playin' with ya, buddy! Seriously, though, thanks for the advice.
controlthebleeding
RAID is absolutely a bit much - but I wasn't clear on Drabley's Cosmonaut's needs for secure back ups or "i-don't-give-a-fuck" back ups.Admittedly, when it comes to computers, I tend to speak directly from my experience and what I use/need day to day to run my business. If I lost data or a drive I lose a lot of money due to downtime. So I tend to prefer not to fuck around with Best Buy shit. best buy shit....lol... i probably agree. the only thing i go to best buy for is..... well come to think of the only thing i've bought there in the last 5 months has been a pack of m&m's. mattstrike
Just playin' with ya, buddy! Seriously, though, thanks for the advice. As was I! I love how every bit of nuanced sarcasm is totally, 100% lost over this damned electronic medium! And you are very welcome my friend. mattstrike
the only thing i've bought there in the last 5 months has been a pack of m&m's. HAHAHA! Did you put them on your Best Buy card to get 0% financing for 6 months?
headtowall
i have a western digital and it works great. domnt know how much it cost, got it from work for free
amsteel
I've had a WD for 2 years and no problems, its worth spending a little more cause when you lose 500GBs of shit you'll be pissed. It's all about redundancy.
illusionofchris
Western Digital makes really good drives. But the software that is pre-installed on it is pretty shitty.

Guest duhpunk
I recommend having two (unless you're backing up your main hard drive's contents): One as a master and one as a backup. I've had both good luck and bad luck despite taking care of them all the same. what he said. externals can fail too. gotta cover your bases. if you have a laptop, i recommend getting a USB powered one so you can take it with you wherever you go.
