Need a new bike. Fixed or single speed?

Recommended Posts

They're fun, that's all. Ride your bike either way, it's good for you and it's an exciting way to relate to your environment rather than just plowing through it.

This. Get what kind of bike you think you think would work the best for your circumstances, and forget any image associated with it. It's a transportation/recreation device, not a lifestyle accessory.

Did anyone read my OP? I don't give a shit about the image. I just need a light bike thats relatively cheap. It sounds like the control and features I'm looking for is a single, thanks KW! What the hell is a free wheel?

Freewheel just means you can coast. With fixed gears, the sprocket is 'fixed' to the hub so you can't coast. Flip-flop hubs have a fixed gear on one side and a freewheel on the other side so you can flip the wheel and try out both approaches. That might be a good way to go.
