Favorite TV Show Theme

Recommended Posts

I'm currently hooked on the show Weeds -- absolutely obsessed. I was doing some research on the song “Little Boxes” which you may know as the theme for the show Weeds. Since Season 2 a plethora of different artists (Elvis Costello, the Shins, Regina Spektor, Randy Newman, Death Cab, etc…) have covered the song and I was looking for a definitive list. Of course my good friend Wikipedia has it all. Upon reading the article I found out that the melody used in the song originally written by Malvina Reynolds matched the melody of a song titled “Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania” by Guy Mitchell. Amusing. Also, in the show, the odd child Shane wants to move to Pittsburgh – I wonder if that’s why they chose to write that part in. Continuing with the song, the word “Ticky-tack” is now in the dictionary because of the lyrics in the song.

Anyways, the song isn't exactly mind blowing, well, I'm lying, I'm sure if I listened to Reynolds version more than twice in a row I'd blow my head off. However, after hearing so many different artists breathe new life and put different twists on it I have become quite fond of it.

Here is a complete list of everyone who has covered the song "Little Boxes"

* Ep.2-01: Elvis Costello

* Ep.2-02: Death Cab for Cutie

* Ep.2-03: Engelbert Humperdinck

* Ep.2-04: Kate and Anna McGarrigle (as "Petites boîtes", in French)

* Ep.2-05: orchestral composition by Maestro Charlie Barnett

* Ep.2-06: Aidan Hawken (MySpace page)

* Ep.2-07: Ozomatli

* Ep.2-08: The Submarines

* Ep.2-09: Tim DeLaughter of the The Polyphonic Spree

* Ep.2-10: Regina Spektor

* Ep.2-11: Jenny Lewis with Johnathan Rice

* Ep.2-12: Malvina Reynolds

Third season episodes

* Ep.3-01: Randy Newman

* Ep.3-02: Angelique Kidjo

* Ep.3-03: Kinky (in Spanish)

* Ep.3-04: Donovan

* Ep.3-05: Billy Bob Thornton

* Ep.3-06: The Shins

* Ep.3-07: The Individuals (MySpace page)

* Ep.3-08: Man Man

* Ep.3-??: The Decemberists

I think the Shins is my favorite, I really liked the Spanish version, and the hip-hop (I can't remember who did it) take was quite interesting.
