derek123
Last night I was playing a record. The needle dropped onto it, and as it started towards the grooves, it just slid across the record. I tried playing it a couple more times, and it did the same thing. I didn't know why it was doing this, but I thought about it for a second, and realized it could be because the needle was just worn out enough that it wasn't catching the grooves, thus sliding across the record. Is this my problem? I've had to replace worn out needles lots of times before, but this has never happened.
xxmartinxx
Unless the stylus is complete broken off, it's more likely a tracking force or anti-skating issue.
derek123
The stylus isn't broken. Can you elaborate on tracking force, and anti-skating issue?
xxmartinxx
What kind of turntable is it?
melikecheese
You just need to adjust your counter weight at the back of the tonearm. If your table doesn't have one, you should toss it in the trash and buy a new one.
Dillhole
Definitely sounds like a anti-skate/counter weight problem. Doesn't hurt to make sure the turntable is as level as physically possible too.
derek123
I'm in the process of moving right now. But as soon as I get settled i'll check on all of this stuff. Thanks for the info.
thieves
if you have a record with a blank side, put it blank side up and set the needle on it as if you're playing it. adjust your anti-skate until the tonearm doesn't favor going in towards the center or out towards the edge. once you do this, you can rule out your anti-skate controls as the root of the problem. philviral
That doesn't always work... I tried that once and my arm swings straight to the middle regardless of anti-skate settings.
thieves
all that means is that your anti-skate doesn't work correctly
derek123
Heyoo. I'm all moved in and checked everything out. My arm doesn't have any counter weight controls on the back. And I don't know where to look for the ant-skating. Also, the turntable is an Audio-Technica AT-PL50. Definitely not the best. I'll be buying a new one as soon as I can, but I'd really like to fix this one so i'm not with out records for a while.
