catalinacaper
To get my PhD in Chemical Engineering at Oregon State. Teaching Assistantship, $1500/month stipend, etc. I'm a Florida kid born and raised, so if anyone here is familiar with the town/state feel free to show off your mad knowledge. I have about 8 weeks before I have to move all of my things to the other coast.

thebiglebowski
Are you locked into your advisor selection yet? Some professors pump out PhDs and some really keep their students around a while before graduating them. If you can, ask some students and try to latch onto an advisor who's students graduate fast. No bullshit (at least at my school) it can mean the difference in graduating a year quicker.
catalinacaper
I'm not locked into anyone yet, but I do have a pretty good idea of who I'd like to advise me. I've just started the process of talking to people about what and what not to do. In terms of "college hick town"... I've lived in FLORIDA all my life.. Don't forget lol. I'm sure it doesn't even compare.

albie007
I live in eugene oregon, which is 45 min away. I only pass thru there on the way to the coast, mostly. Its much cleaner than eugene, less bums too. Never heard of it being called corvegas - i guess with all the poker delis and casinos in the state. Where eugene is considered liberal (hippie history and all) corvalis is more consertative at least im told. The fam and I usually attend the davinci festival in the summer...its worth checking out. And I wouldn't call it a hick town, but I grew up in georgia so I might bee a lil jaded. Don't get me wrong they are here just not as bad. Avoid salem....its a hole. Ranch records are there. Others too, I just don't know em. And if u venture into eugene be sure and check out House of Records. I found a number of oop gems a few yrs ago when i started collecting. They are downtown on 13th. And for every beer known to man check out the beer stein. There's also emerald city vinyl and skips on the westside. And I hope you like football cuz oregonians are f...ing nuts for it! Enjoy. thebiglebowski
Focusing on the job and not the town. Never been to Oregon. One day. There are two things that have a huge impact on the time it takes to finish. One (mentioned above) is the advisor's past record on how quickly they graduate students. The other is that you should try your absolute hardest to choose a topic that is tied to a funded project through the university (the alternative being something that is just a "good idea" or work that is preliminary in hopes of getting a funded project, but isn't already bringing in money). The fact that you got accepted means that you are smart. You'll be able to find something at make it work regardless. Most important factor to success, though, is getting good data and getting high on your advisor's task list. Choosing a project that pays the bills (or one that is closely inspired by one) is the best thing you can do to have a good experience. You made an awesome choice going for the PhD. Got frustrated at times during the process but no regrets. Now that I have a normal 9 to 5 job I miss all the freedom (work whenever I felt like it, sleep in everyday, etc...). Good luck.
